I have a 68 omc stringer 120 electric shift and the water intake is not holes or slots on the side but a screen on the corner of the rudder. Can i get some muffs for this style or is my only option submersion in a cut off barrel?IMG_0381[1].jpgIMG_0395[1].JPG

Ooh. Wow. Thats a tricky one. I have never seen a set of muffs that would work with that design. Yeah, I suggest you go with the cut off barrel option.

for around $5, you should be able to get a rad flushing tee, and just install it in the water supply hose between the intermediate and the thermostat housing of the engine

better than muffs because you can check the impeller function in the lake by just unscrewing the cap at idle

On another site a while back I seen something like this. This is what the guy made. Do a search "fake a lake" on google and a bunch of home made type things come up on the images.

I have something like it on my GMC truck 454 dually. I blew a heater core once towing my 16,000 5th wheel and almost left me stranded. If it ever happens again I can bypass the heater core now and head on down the road.

Looking at that again (and again) If you can't rig something up to attach over the screen, I wonder if it would be safe to attach something to the motor. You need to make sure the water pump in the drive has water going through it. I have read it only takes a few secs to damage a pump with no water.

that's why it has to be installed in line, so water goes both ways, to the thermostat hsg and back towards the impeller (if running with the drive on the boat - if the outdrive is removed, those other adapters are fine)

So when using your T adapter Howard, would a good indicator be water coming out of the outdrive. In other words the water you see exiting your outdrive with this system must pass through the impeller housing before it exits the outdrive. Thereby keeping your impeller safe if the motor is running. Is this correct?

Re: muffs????????

If I install a T before the thermostat won't the impeller b pushing back against the T, and eventually b running dry?

You could get lucky at Wal-mart and find a Rubbermaid storage box large enough to dunk your outdrive in. Or even build one out of plywood.

push what back?

If you get a factory manual and have a look at the water flow diagrams, it will make more sense.
Tee-ing water in between the tstat and impeller is efficient, And the flushing adapter is simply an improvement on the flushing tee that OMC themselves offered as an option that put water in the same place (between impeller and tstat)

^ that one however, lacks the handy in-water impeller check ability and if the out of sight-out of mind cap is ever left loose or off, you can destroy the engine which is why I wouldn't recommend those (plus they're 10X more $ than a flush tee)

this is how deep a stringer needs to be to properly pump water - rubbermaid container would be more of an above ground pool

Re: muffs????????

Ya I looked at the water flow diagram and that's why I was asking. The water flows from the impeller to the thermostat housing and if I put the T there and run water to it the water will be travelling from the thermostat to the impeller witch is backwards. So r u just keeping it wet sO it doesn't damage it but actually using the water hose to push the water through the block?
