I was driving home yesterday and passed by a boat trailer for sale with a bright red For Sale sign and a phone number on it. I stopped, called and got no answer but left a number. The trailer was ok but not great but I think I could make it work for what I need for the right price. The owner called me today, I asked the normal questions. I asked what he was asking and he said $300 or best offer. It said no problem, when can I come and get it. I was about an hour away and he said he'd meet me where the trailer was in about two hours.
I drove all the way there, waited about a half hour for him to show and when he got there, I didn't say a word or complain, just said, $300 sounds ok, took out $300 but he then said that he wasn't sure he wanted to sell it yet?
This clown made me drive an hour out of my way, for a trailer that he had a FOR SALE sign on, for which I had agreed to his asking price, that he then decided to not want to sell? I was livid, this idiot has it still sitting with the for sale sign on it, is still asking the same price, but don't want to sell it? I even had a few buddies call and he did the same thing. I had each of them offer him both more and less, but no deal.
At this point he can stick his trailer, I'm not driving back there for nothing again, but I can't figure what he's trying to do.
The trailer is ok but not what I really was looking for, but I could make it work for me if I swapped a few boats around. The trailer is worth about what he's asking, I can buy a brand new one for a bit more but they aren't galvanized. The wheel bearings were loose, the tongue was bent some and the bow stop was fixed and not adjustable.

My last boss had a car his wife was forcing him to sell. He wanted to keep it and would turn down all deals. She was happy as long as he made an effort. Not sure how long he was able to keep it up.

Re: Must be a full moon?

I've had about ten people call, each time he gives a different price, but won't sell. The highest price was $400 and the lowest was $250. He did the same thing to several people. One buddy got pretty upset with the idiot, he told him that he was driving two hours to come and get it, they guy agreed, and met him a few hours later. My buddy really wasn't that far away, but his cell phone number is an out of state number. The guy did the same thing, he even tried to see if he was expecting to get a higher offer, but so far everyone that I sent there has been sent away with the same excuse, that he's not sure he wants to sell it.
If I didn't want to sell something, I wouldn't put it out one a major highway with a bright red For Sale sign on it, and especially wouldn't strike a deal on the phone, then when the guy gets there, tell him he can't have it. He's sooner or later going to run into a real nut job with no restraint.

I was contemplating it myself. It's at a trailer park, on a main road right at a main intersection chained to a phone pole with 3/4" link chain. It's an odd trailer anyhow, one of those twin rail, no cross member jobs that came with the small Bayliners. I'd make use of it for $300, but it would take some work to make it fit a normal boat. It would be better for a jet ski or small v hull boat, but it's got 12' wheels, but super heavy springs. A real odd combo. The bunk brackets are fixed and not adjustable so a custom set up would have to be made to fit a normal shaped V hull on it. The bunks now are only about 18" apart and on a 45 degree angle. What ever was on it had a very deep V all the way back and was pretty short, no more than 16 or 17'. It also had to be pretty light to have only 12" tires. I didn't get the 5 leaf springs though with those wheels? They were also 4 lug.

I found another trailer today, so no big deal, this one fits the boat as is but needs a little tlc. It will be fine with a new set of rollers and some fresh paint. I already sand blasted it and primed it and replaced all the spring bolts and bushings. It will be good as new in a few days.

Re: Must be a full moon?

I don't think he'd find too many young kids looking for an old boat trailer?
I am considering listing his trailer for him on one of the free sites, and include that cell number. The number of calls he'd get would drive him up a wall. List it for like $50.

Trolling for buddies???

Trolling for buddies???

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe then he'll move it or sell it one of the two. Maybe he's just lonely and trying to meet new friends.

Re: Must be a full moon?

Me and my wife had something like that happen to us but on the other side. We were selling her car and had parked it on a family friends business parking lot about 30 minutes from the house. We had one guy call us out there about 6-8 times most times he would just sit there and talk about anything but buying the car. He never drove it, listened to it or even looked at the motor. He offered a price once that was 3 grand less than my lowest price i would take for it. Just some nut that wanted to drive me crazy. We decided to keep the car after about 3 weeks of people driving us nuts (It was one of those teenager girl cars so every kid in the state had to look at it with their parents and then not buy it) Every once in a great while he will call us about that car he would like to buy. I tell him it is not for sale and he says he sure would like to buy it. What a nut, I am not sure what he is doing. If this is to get the price down he certainly is patient it has been going on for 2 years.

Re: Must be a full moon?

I drove by the same trailer today with the same number posted on it but he's moved it to another location about two miles away. I called again and this time he said he wanted a hundred dollars more than before. I told him I'd be right there with cash. When I told him that he started to squirm on the price, all of a sudden it didn't include the wheels. He asked me if I had wheels for it, I told him no problem, then he went on about how the frame was bent and that he really wasn't sure if he wanted to sell it. My following comments that I made clear to him aren't suited for this forum. I passed his number on to a few others to simply torment him now. I have no idea what he's trying to do, but it certainly has nothing to do with selling a trailer. He's got to be fronting something or trying to attract a certain buyer? No amount of money gets the trailer and no matter what, he has some excuse.
After the first go round, I already decided that there's no way I want the trailer, he can shove it as far as I am concerned, but I just don't get his game. It's chained up to a pole with 3/4" link chain, so he's not just waiting for someone to steal it, and it's clearly got a FOR SALE sign on both sides and his cell phone number. One guy said he was going to put his number on one of the free sites but list it as having a super clean Corvette or something for real cheap. If he just want's to meet people, that ought to do it.
