I recently (June) purchased a Montgomery Ward?s outboard motor that the owner said was at least 40 years old. Can someone tell me what year it is?

Montgomery Ward 6HP Sea King

Serial: 76X 10877

He didn?t have an owner?s / service manual. Can someone recommend a service manual?
I suspect this may have been made by Gales, an OMC division (like Evinrude and Johnson) because the plate said ?OBC Certified?. Does this mean that spare parts by Evinrude or Johnson would work and are more widely available?

Currently I have been unable to start it. I use it as a sailboat kicker, so it is not used as often as say a fishing boat. I had been able to start it albeit with quite a few pulls. I had used it three times since buying it but at the end of June I was unable to start it, and I haven?t attempted since then, deciding it was time to get some advice/ service manuals on it.

The prior owner was uncertain of the fuel/oil ratios because it was his grandfather?s. He thought it was 30 to 1. I used that ratio for the present tankful. I used regular 87 octane unleaded gas mixed with SAE 30 Chevron auto oil. Could that be causing the starting problems?

That's a Chrysler-built outboard, either 1967 or 1968. Parts are difficult.

Try eBay for a manual and look for dealers in obsolete Chrysler parts.

Begin by checking compression and spark, and let us know what you find.

Again, it's going to be tough to find parts.

You need to know about the Chrysler Crew. geocities.com/thechryslercrew/ There are parts links there. Franzmarine is one.

69 ,Chrysler built,Fuel mix is 24:1 My research indicates any quality 2 stroke oil.
chain saw,TCW,TCWII,TCW3 rated oil.DON'T USE AUTO OIL
Your oil gas mix isn't likely to cause your problem.
Most likely your motor is suffering from "little use syndrom".Usually a carb rebuild with attention to cleaning all passages and jets will get you going. You may want to clean or replace the plugs.
