Hi everyone, I got in a Montgomery Ward Sea King. I believe by the model number its a 1959 25Hp.

Since this is my first boat project I was wondering if anyone would give me a couple of tips on how I should go about this. From what I can tell so far the motor is stuck. The guy said that it was running the last time he used it.

Can you still get parts for this motor?

Thanks for all the help in advance :)

to get the unit unstuck, is it stuck in gear or is the head locked up? if its the head you can try removing the spark plugs and using some penetrating oil "pb blaster" spray into the head of each cylinder then try to slowly work the top of the unit back and forth, sometimes the rings will get stuck and with some patience you can break them free. as far as knowing anything about your model and year of unit the oldest i go back is early seventies but the principles of running are the same. spark compression good fuel it should run . good luck

Read the FAQ section in the Engines or Johnson/Evinrude forums...tells you how to awaken a sleeping outboard.

Where is that at? Could you give me a link to it? I couldn't find it. Probably right in front of me and i didn't see it.

And I haven't got into it to far yet. But I still haven't got it free. Just wondering since im new to boat engines and drives. Should I be able to turn the prop if its not in gear?

I'm not familiar with Your motor, But if it has a foward/neutral/reverse lower unit, You should be able to spin the prop. in neutral.
Good Luck with Your motor.

Re: MW Sea King Need help.

Your motor is indeed a 25hp Seaking 1959 model. It was made by OMC under the Gale division. OMC housed Evinrude, Gale, and Johnson outboards. Gale made there products for chain stores such as Montgomery Wards, Royal Tire Company, Brooklure, etc, etc. Seaking was sold under the Montgomery Wards badge brand. They are all the same except some cosmetic differences such as tanks and decals.

Here is a link to a site to confirm your model number if you wish.

http://www.discount-marine-parts.com/ob_sea_king_gale_model.html

Alot of the same parts such as gaskets, seals, carb kits, ignition sets and so on were used by all three (Johnson, Evinrude and Gale). So your in luck:)

Here is a website that sells parts and stuff for 1955 to present Johnson/Evinrude motors. It will have your parts but under the Johnson/Evinrude section. Remember your motor maybe badged with Sea King, but it is a Gale Motor. Last Gale motor made was in 1963, I think. The link also will allow to compare parts numbers from the SeaKing/Gale with the Johnson/Evinrude motors:D.

Here is a link to a parts diagram for your motor with parts numbers.

You can download the diagram to your computer so you can visualized them better, they are compact. On your computer you can make the diagram larger.

Hope this helps ya out.

Wow, Thanks! This really does help! I still wasn't able to get the prop to spin free. I tried every position but nothing. I am thinking its not even changing gears. I'm still trying to learn really how this works. Since I'm new to boat engines.

Re: MW Sea King Need help.

You stated that the motor is stuck, well you need to determine if it is the head(powerhead) or the lower unit. If you separate the lower unit from the exhaust housing and the motor turns over freely then you have an issue with your lower unit. If you separate the lower unit from the exhaust housing and the power head is still lock up then you have a issue with the powerhead.

This link show the lower unit and the exhaust housing.

Here is a link to article about how to perform general maintenance and repairs to a 10hp Johnson/Evinrude motor from 1955 to 1963. It is meant to give you a general idea how to remove the lower unit from the exhausting. Look under the water pump section.

At least you will know if your power head is locked up or if your lower unit is bad or both.

If your power head turns over freely, please do compression reading to see if the motor worth putting money into.

The Secret File section of this site has a lot good information.

Re: MW Sea King Need help.

Quick question on this thread; I have a 1958 sea king motor. I finally go the fuel line rebuilt and tried to fire her up today. It will not start. Should I try to clean the carb? Is there a gearbox that requires lube?

Johnsewe and muata:

You have both done a no-no called a hijack. That is when you take attention away from the OP (original poster) question and turn it to yours. Very rude.

Both of you need to start your own threads..

Thanks for your cooperation. :)
