I am rebuilding and re rigging a early 70's 14' Mckee. Paint is finished new console built and wired and 50hp Johnson all rigged up. My question is with the way that the floor angles how have others dealt with this when installing seats? I'm guessing I could just cut a block of wood on the angle but just curious what others have done.

Thanks for any insight!!!

Pics always help us to help you so we can see what you see. I'm not sure I understand what your issue is. If the deck is sloped then your suggestion seems logical enough. Pics will help us to help you.;)

Depending on the type of seats you're wanting to put in, Most of the McKee's I've seen have used Pedestal style seating so again, your plan sound good, however you would need to grind off you nice new paint or gelcoat in order to glass the wood bases to the deck and then attach the seat pedastals to the wood bases. That would be my suggestion. Other's will come along with some other ideas, possibly. What kinds of materials did you use to restore the interior of the boat?

I had a 16' McKee. Floor was same and I believe due to water logged foam swelling. Ended up scrapping my boat as there is no way to dry it out or to separate the hull to redo the foam. I shimmed the pedestals with washers to get seats level.

The Mckee had basically the same layout as a Boston Whaler. A flat board across the boat and a swivel with seat mounted on that. You can choose a swivel or a pedestal seat directly to the board.

I used the same paint that you used in your link for the flamingo ;) . After thinking about it I might just use Bob's Idea and add a bench seat so that I can gain a little storage room for maybe pfds and a tackle box. I am building the wood items other than the console face from pine as I have some red oak that I cut on my saw mill drying. After the red oak is dryed out probably the end of the summer I will Remove the pine and use it as a template to put in the finished oak. The console was built from a walk thru windshield console that was cut down to fit and re glassed and gelcoated and a piece of dryed red oak sealed and added to the face. I will post pics of it.

Very Nice Craftsmanship. I really like the console. Your attention to detail really shows!!! A Bench Seat WOULD provide a lot of added benefits.

Thank you! Funny thing is other than paint and fiberglass resin and a few dollars in wood all the parts on this boat were scrounged up from other boat hulls I have. Even the engine was put together from 2 other engines. I did also buy new throttle and shift cables. I might have 600.00 in it including the hull and trailer purchase.

Now depending on durability......... if you decide to seal all the wood use a quality marine varnish......multiple coats with a light rubdown with some 000 or 0000 steel wool. Marine varnish has UV protection. Red oak is normally not desired in a boat but will work if properly treated . White oak lasts longer and is a stronger material.

I use oak for my dash panels and covered it with clear epoxy followed by marine varnish since the epoxy needs UV protection. Page 7 post 159 (before the windshield was mounted) http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...oject-begins-splashed-7-15-10-a-329927-7.html

You are doing some real nice work and at a super nice price!

Considering right now it is all pine I am going to seal it and my wife wants the bench seat carpet covered... Bad experience with her hind quarters and a splinter on another boat.......

If you want to keep the wood natural like Bob says sand it down to 220 grit then give it 2-3 coats of epoxy then 3-4 coats of a good quality Marine varnish an there won't be any worries about rot OR splinters:D
