my 14ft 1988 bayliner capri w/50 force motor is not going as fast as i think it should. My boat is authorized to carry 4 people or 600lbs...how fast should my boat go under "normal " circumstances? my speedo reads 20mph at full throttle...is that consistent

Is that speed from your boat speedometer or a GPS? The boat speedometers typically aren't very accurate, so most recommend using a GPS to verify the speed.

What RPM is your motor at and what prop do you have on? We're looking for diameter and pitch. If you don't know the prop information you might have to look at the prop to try to find a stamp that states as much, or the manufacturer and model number. The Prop will typically be stamped with something like 14 13, which means 14" diameter, 13 pitch.

Don't trust the boat speedometer. verify the actual speed.

There are a few more variable that you have to consider beyond speed.

1. What rpm's is the boat running at WOT?

2. Weigh the boat and make sure it's not water logged.

If the boat is good and the motor is turning the correct rpms at WOT, thats as fast as you can go.

If the boat is good and you not getting full rpm's the you need to reprop so that you get there. That is assuming that the motor is operating correctly and can acheive the rpms.
