Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Q-tip method worked pretty good and got some spots off entirely and got others flattened down enough for Brenna (my daughter) to get get some paint on and cover up the rest.

Glad it worked. You owe me one good idea, to be paid at a later date.;)

64 - You may be waiting a long time for that one good idea.

Paint dudes here is an idea that is not mine but one I got off an airplane restore site. Those people have some good practices and ideas as they are painting over aluminum too. So here is my thought that led me to doing some research on this one.

Gas and most paint don't get along very well. Gas always beats up typical paint and paint will bubble and come up. Have you all had the same experience? So I did some digging for this boat. Here is what I am learning and if no strong opposition from the mob I am going to try.

Paint the gunwales and splashwell with flat white and cover with brushable rusto. clear coat. Flat so the clear will stick well, cut down on the sand time and, with clear I get the gloss look and potential fill to give smoother finish... maybe on the smooth finish. My hope is that the white will hold up a bit better with that plastic clear coat on it and fight against gas spills better. Second thought is the UV toll on the surfaces that get smacked by the sun the most (gunwales and splashwell). White will yellow over time with UV rays pounding on them so here is an idea. Here is part of the conversation from this site - http://s362974870.onlinehome.us/forums/air/index.php?showtopic=208624 - add a few drops of blue to flat white." #5, "Actually, the blue does not prevent yellowing, but when the yellowing occurs, the blue fools the eye into seeing white. This has to do with the way different wavelengths are sensed by the human eye and brain. But if it looks right, it is right." #7

I got more ideas on how to work this topside paint job. More later if folks are interested. I am not a paint guru... far from it, but I do like to learn and experiment and paint is fun for me.

Glad it worked. You owe me one good idea, to be paid at a later date.;)

64,

You are a busy guy. I tried sending this as a PM but your mailbox is full. I will post hear and hopefully you will notice.

Yes I was talking about the starcraft page. Sorry I did not make that clear. The Starcraft page is working now. My goal was to get most of the big stuff done o the SS done by the end of January but now it looks like more the middle to end of February so a early summer splash seems very doable. That would be cool to do a lake cruise somewhere with the West MI. starcraft peeps.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

My experience with Rusto's sprayable clear was not good. It got chalky and flaky pretty quickly. Not sure on the brushable. In my opinion, the beauty if Rusto is that it's easy to touch up and probably always easily available. I'd just deal with the issues as they arise as opposed to taking preventative measures.

I love the red and white. Looks sweet. I'm not a fan of treating that piece of metal on the bow as it's own entity with the paint. I'd rather see you continue your paint line down through it. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2280.jpg Obviously that's just personal preference.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

EZ - I did not have a bad experience with sprayable clear in the past but it was not great either. I figured the brushable/rollable would self level anyway so spray is not really needed AND extensive masking is not needed. You are speaking my language on the use of rusto over other more exotic expensive paints. I am sure those paints work but I have kids and I push boats into places for fishing so touch ups will be done in future.

Thanks for the compliment on the color scheme. I was torn on the upsweep or keep the bow piece separate. I was going to try this to keep it "old school" to see if will work when the boat is all back together. The nice thing is that changing it is quick and easy with a de-glosser, masking tape, high density roller and stock Rustoleum Regal Red paint. Not sure if you got a PM question from me about the vinyl (again) let me know and I may have to re-send it.

The areas on my (last) boat where the clear was damaged was one place on the gunwale where I always rested my arm (suntan lotion?) and a spot or two where some bait had laid. It seemed to be more easily damaged than the regular paint.

I do not have a recent PM from you.

Cleared out the PM box, lots of old stuff. Should work now. As I said the Mariner is not a restore, but now you can look at at least, thanks for the heads up.

I'm going to keep planting the seed to have Michigan Mada Meet this summer. There are many of us and there should be plenty more boats available this year.:) And Yes, Ind and Ohio would be welcome too.;)

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

That is interesting to note. Suntan lotion and bait (soft plastic?) did a number. Well I am going to experiment then and see if rolled on will be a bit more durable with the increased thickness. I spray bombed my 12' feather craft with blue metal fleck and clear without much problem BUT I put copious amounts of clear on. I don't even want to talk about how much that paint job cost me. Let's just say that so far I am cheaper on this 16' SS by rolling it on.

GA, she's 13...i'd say he should get all the work he can out of her before she turns 14 and becomes a bigger PITA than the bow board

Now that is funny but to late. She is a delight to have around but she is a sassy thing.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

I have almost all the stuff I need to complete the boat. A few more things to come in and/or purchase. I got the seats and Tach today. Seats are Wally world on-line store and the tach is a used item I got from Van's Sport and Marine here in Grand Rapids. I got the Tach for $10 and it is in pretty good shape. No scratches on the face at all.

As an added bonus you can see my squinty eyed self in the tach picture... enjoy.

Nice seats! If that tach is from a Maxum brand boat.....I question it's compatibility with your motor. Maxums usually either ran Force outboards, or I/O's....either of which would use a different tach than your JohnRude.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Thanks EZ - Turns out that red is not a true red but more a Regal Red. Good for me because it is about as close a match as possible to the boat red. Nice.

The parts guys said it would work but if it does not then back it goes and I get a different tach from the shop. I asked about that very possibility of it not working and it was no problem to return it. Not that I had any idea on what you just said about compatibility when I asked.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Great googly mooglies. I was cutting the last little bow piece for the floor last night and my lousy jigsaw broke. The motor is fine but the little piece that holds the blade on threw out both screws and it was a stinker to get one back in. I spent about 45 min. wrestling with that before I said to myself "Self this is a piece of junk. Why are you working so hard on it when it jumps and struggles to cut?" What could I do? I had to agree. So I went out and bought another jigsaw this morning from Menards for $50.

http://www.menards.com/main/tools-h...linefiner-orbital-jigsaw/p-1633703-c-9082.htm

Believe it or not this is a huge upgrade for me. It should get me through this project at least. I will get some pictures up then I get that last piece cut and fitted.

Question: After you folks cut and sealed the transom did you seal the entire wood piece to the stern with epoxy resin or 4200/5200? Or is it just as good to seal the hardware for the motor, drains, top of splashwell etc... to seal and hold that wood transom on the stern? I am thinking about simply using a tube of 3m 5200 for laminating the two .75 plywood together for the 1.5 transom needed. I figured that would fill in any voids a bit better that the resin. True thinking?

Laminate your ply pieces with epoxy. It's as good a glue as you're gonna get. No, I did not glue the completed assembly into the boat.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Nah, TightBond III, Epoxy, Gorilla Glue are all good solutions for laminating the two pieces together. Keep the 3200/5200 for sealing up fasteners.

I went ahead and drilled two holes in the "shelf" that holds the transom to help drainage, ya know.

Definitely didn't glue it in place though.

Beauty Jas and EZ. Thanks for responding. Epoxy it is then as I will be working with that anyway. I like the holes for drainage. There will be two additional holes in mine tonight.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Running into some interesting problems with the seats and pedestals. I pulled out two pedestals that were 13" high and the old seats gave another 2.5-3" rounding it out to 15-16". With the new pedestals standing at 13.5" and the seats that are much firmer with less "squish" to them plus the beefed up attachment I am at around 4.5-5" on the seats. Now I am sitting around 18 inches up. I was checking out seat placement last night I was so high up I felt like Andre the Giant in a toy boat/car at the lowest setting. I figure I have a couple options. Cut the pedestals down 1.5", the maximum the configuration allows, at the aluminum posts or do away with the pedestals and get my money back and make boxes with swivels on the boxes to allow for movement. I could see this as an opportunity to create little pockets of storage areas under the seats in those boxes. Hmmmm.....

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Yeah that's high. I had back-to-back seats in my 16' and they were too high. I actually have 8" pedestals under my bucket seats in my SS.
