NOTE TO ADMINISTRATOR: Please delete my other posts. They are cluttering up your pages and are not relevant. Thank you, skiph.
I had been doing something quite stupid with the distributor and finally got my brain cells back.
The motor runs like a top....at a tad below 140.... with great oil pressure.
There still is a slight clattering noise (but less loud than the noise that started this journey) I just think I may have not set the pushrods quite right (still not good at doing that adjustment when it's running????)
Gonna run it out to the Gulf and try to run the barnacles off the bottom AND see how she does.
I want to thank all of you for your help and patience..... thanks to all of you I now have a far better awareness of my engine (thus I know how solid it is) and feel a lot more comfortable that I can handle glitches when they come up.
Skiph

If an over tightened push rod bends a camshaft, you will have way more worries than a timing problem.

To check the advance assembly, simply push one weight towards the outside of the distributor and release it. it should move freely out against the springs and return fully to the seated position when you release it.
Did you do as I suggested and remove the felt at the top of the shaft and check for a screw?
Did you verify thet the roll pin is stll in one piece?

There's no felt on the shaft.
The weights seem to be moving freely, although one moves slowly back to its original positon.
I have not removed the pin. The gear is quite solid on the shaft andI can look thru the center of it and it is in one piece.

If you tighten the distributor bolt down, does it clamp like it is suppposed to;, i.e., you can't turn the distributor by hand?

Is the keying on the rotor broken/sheared? That will make the rotor float. I did this once when I started the engine with the distributor screws loose.
I assume the inside of the distributor cap is not cracked or dirty, etc., to where the spark is jumping about inside there. And the rotor is making good contact with the top of the cap.

Not sure what you mean by "keying"?
It occurs to me - never having had a distributor that ALSO drives the oil pump) - that I have not been inserting the shaft correctly.
I now believe that I should take extra care in making sure that the shaft blade (the very wide blade that inserts into the oil pump slot) must be all the way in.... as well as the rotor aligned to Number 1 spark?
What I am guessing is that by not being careful about that I have been simply been putting the distributor shaft in and concentrating only on aligning the rotor.
So, even tho I tighten it down hard .... when I go to start the engine the shaft jumps down into the oil pump slot and my timing goes whacko????
Could it be that simple???????

when u clamped it down, was the base flange tight against the block?

In the picture you posted yesterday, it showed a small round oil soaked felt in the top of the shaft directly under where the rotor goes.

Re: My 165hp IL 6 cylinder is Fixed........?????

No screw under the felt....just flat metal.
I was very careful this time to make sure the base of the distributor shaft was inserted into the oil pump slot... and the rotor pointing to number 1 when at TDC....... tried to start it with no luck. Opened the distributor cap and the rotor had jumped about 120 degrees AGAIN.
This is just plain nuts.
I know that, if I can get this fixed, the engine will be running smooth and strong again.
Just can't figure it out.
Puhleez, someone tell me what is going on here. I have never heard of this before.

when u say "jumped 120*" after you tried to start it, exactly what do you mean? That if you move the engine back to Top Dead Center on the number 1 cylinder compression stroke, the rotor is now pointing 120* away from the number one plug terminal in the distributor cap where just before you tried to start it it was pointing AT the number 1 cylinder terminal?

Have you treid twisting the rotor on the shaft to make sure its seated and locked to the shaft?

I have checked the shaft to make sure it is secure and tight.
As to your main question. Yes. That is exactly what is happening.
This might be a dumb question but.... Does the points plate have to be put back in a certain way???? If so, and it is wrong, could that be the cause????

Re: My 165hp IL 6 cylinder is Fixed........?????

Yes and no. yes it needs to be in the proper location, no it will not move the rotor.
what you need to do now is put the motor at TDC#1 compression stroke. leave the cap off, index the rotor to the block with some form of a mark. Have someone crank the engine a few times and watch the rotor for any unusual movement . Then hand crank the motor back to TDC #1 compression stroke and check the rotor against the mark you made on the block. If its not aligned, either the cam gear at the front(timing gear) slips on the cam, the distributor gear slips on the shaft, the rotor slips on the shaft or the cam gear and the distributor gear are incorrectly mated.

Re: My 165hp IL 6 cylinder is Fixed........?????

Thanks Airpacker. Whether you did it knowingly, or not, you pointed out my total stupidity.
The boat now starts right up.... good oil pressure, heat stays at 140, and there is a mild clattering of pushrods (?) which I figure comes from some of the putzing I've been doing.
I will now take her out into the Gulf and run her thru her paces (and hope the barnacles fall by the wayside).
Thanks to all who have been so helpful and patient.
Skiph
