Some of those shifter dogs have a groove cut into the end that must face forward. It can physically be reversed BUT will not function properly. I don't recall if your model engine is one of them or not... did you notice any grooves on one end?

HI randy. Welcome to iboats. Does the armature plate found beneath the flywheel rotate out of way when the throttle is twisted into the STOP position? How about REV, can you shift in/out ok, or is it on the Fritz too? One simple thing you might check is the shift shaft linkage to see if it is connected properly. If that doesn't do it, you may have to open the gear case again to inspect the clutch dog and gears. Here are some handy links.

they looked the same on both sides. i beieve it could be the shifter holder bolt is losse up top. the one that holds forward nuetral and reverse in place

the pinch bolt that holds the shift handle to the shift shaft? or the bolt that goes through the handle and the slots on the shift shaft that allows some adjustment of the handle and shaft?

It was the shifter hole that was stripped I re threaded with a 5/8 semi threaded bolt. works great . will be re sealing rest of lower unit after or when I change water pump. Do you Know where to get a clutch dog and or forward gears. Great outboard to restore also what kind of paint do I need to repaint the lower housing and the cover.

what I'd do is this...go to marineengine.com and get the part no.s for the clutch dog and fwd gear and either order from them or go online and try to locate them < sometimes just the part no's will link you to ebay sites or other marine sites >, the only place I know of for the retoration paint is in Canada...many of the other members can help you out in the restoration area
