My first boat, 1968 jet star with a 20 Johnson. Who else on this forum owns one or knows any info on these boats? My plans for this will be be to do mild paint and cosmetic restorations.

See pics below of boat.

HI crmaverick. Welcome to iboats. Nice rig. You're in the right place. There is a huge Starcraft/Aluminum boat restoration thread here. Just check under the Boat Restoration Thread on the main forum page and do a search for Starcraft. There is TONS of material to go through, if you so choose. The folks here are great too. They can pretty much answer any questions you may have and walk you through any procedures you may need to do. Congrats on the new toy!

Hey, welcome Maverick! Yah, there may be a few guys that hang around here and know some things about these old Starcrafts.

Man, you found yourself a sharp looking rig there, excellent:D

Tons of info on restoring old boats. They even have an aluminum forum. FG is the last word on restoring oooold glass boats. We are the last word on restoring old Starcrafts. This site is my home but I'll pop into FG every once in a while. They have some talented guys there and that's an understatement. Some of our guys have done some restoration work on Starcraft boats that's out of this world, and that too is an understatement.

As we like to say; Come for the boats, Stay for the people.

Sweet rig by the way.

Hey Maverick. Welcome to the Starmada. Excellent choice among SCs available. There are probably 20+ of us here that have Jets or so it seems to me. Lots to look at. Mine is crimson red metallic over white. It looks like yours might be the same. Mine is a few years older. Keep those pics coming as you make progress.

Any abrasive toothpaste will clear up the windshield.

Welcome Aboard..Thats a sweet & clean little rig! May want a wee bit more power later, but looks great!

Re: My 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star

I just used the link Bwana Don posted for cleaning up the windshield. WoodonGlass uses the same method. Anyway, I have to say it works and works great. My WS was clear, but had a haze to it but not anymore. I can see for miles and miles and miles.

And welcome to the Starmada, Maverick.

any Napa or other auto parts store will have kits to clean up headlights, those would work great.

Probably the headlight kits would work, but a windshield is a lot of area and you would need a $100 bucks or more worth of kits. The kits don't have very large bottles of cleaner. I have about $6 wrapped up in Turtle Wax (2 types) rubbing compound. Doing it all by hand, no drill or buffer is being used. Still need some plexi polish or just use some TW car wax that I already have.

Re: My 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star

Thanks for the replies guys. Have a couple more quick questions. What needs to be done for winterizing the boat? The boat will be outside under a boat cover and I will bring the motor inside. Aside from fogging the motor, what else needs to be done for winterizing the boat/motor?

Thanks

Always a good idea to change the lower unit oil in case any water got in it during the season. Otherwise, not much else needed.

Re: My 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star

EZ is right on about changing the lower unit oil.

Also, I didn't see if she is running or not, but the other thing is using some Stabil in the gas tank and running the motor until the carb(s) are dry. Here's a link for outboard winterizing (one of many). I also fill metal fuel tanks to cut down the possibility of rust in the tank. Outboards are far easier than I/Os to winterize.
