Goldie, I was feeling on top of the world with the progress, until I put the top back on to test fit the floor....... then I had a bit of overwhelming feeling - Oh carp, there is a ton of work left, Im never going to make next summer splash....After a while I remembered, you cant eat the elephant in one bite, just many small bits..... When Im researching the various threads, I try to look at the dates for the posts.....helps keep things in perspective.


Arch, I just finished digging around in the Miss Morgan thread looking for your swim platforms. Those came out great by the way.

I think I am going to use oak on the ski locker hatch and swim platforms, probably for no other reason than I have a bunch of 5/4 18inch wide planks in the attic Ive been saving for a good project. I have some time to figure it out I guess....

Sanded the bottom hull with 120 today and re filled spots....

Shot the 2nd coat of hi-fill also.....Played with the gun a bit, made sure I had 30 PSI under load, opened the fan pattern a bit ans adjusted the spray output as well. Better results, but still not right.....Im going to ask one of the airplane painters from work to come over and give me a tune up on gun set up and technique....this will cost beer!!!! Those guys can drink!!!!

Didja take that Cheapo HF gun apart and clean all the cosmoline out of it before using it?? They are full of gunk from China. Also you pretty much need to disassemble them to really clean em. I'm with GUS, in that I'm bettin your reducer is too HOT and it's drying to quick on ya.

If I remember correctly that stuff only two parts, primer and catalyst. I don't think you "thin it", is that correct Corjen? I'm wondering if the needle size in the HF gun is too small for the primer? It might be intended to be more of a touch up gun. you should really be able to lay it on. If you are going to do a metallic, you will want to make sure you have a good gun. Devilbiss that I got for about 100$ that did a nice job on Miss Morgan. I had an older Devilbiss that worked great on solids, but never worked very good on metallic. This new one was a really nice gun for the $$. If you are going to shell out the $$ on high end paint, you will for sure want to be able to put it on well. I about choked when they gave me the cost for my metallic red, lol!

GT, yes I agree, it seen the fan pattern is still to small, I think I need to play with this gun to get it sorted out. If I cant, its not a huge loss....got it at harbor freight on sale for 10 bucks....

Arch, I hear ya on the gun and cost.....stuff is too dang expensive to get screwed up by a crappy gun..... I look at the devilbiss. Yes, the primer is 2 parts - the reducer does say that its for 90-100 deg F. Im not sure what that actually means tho....I shot both coats on way cooler days than that.

I'm pretty sure the HF gun has a 1.4mm tip and with that thick primer it's NOT gunna shoot it very well. The TCP Global primer gun with the 1.8mm gun WILL be perfect for the primer you have and, the other gun with the 1.4MM tip is MUCH better quality than the HF gun. I Have the I.4 MM TCP gun and I bought the 1.8mm tip so I can switch bewteen them when needed. The tips are $12 bucks and are interchangeable. I also have the 1.0mm touch up gun but have not used it yet. I will be using it later when I touch up the BF where I've dinged it trying to get the Bimini Top installed as well as the Steering Hub. The Reducer ( I learned this from Archbuilder) that you have means that it slows the drying time down for use in higher temps. So since the temps were not that high it should have delayed drying even more. It's probably more due to not enough volume due to tip size, and reduced fan size. Put the Boys to work Mowing Lawns and then steal their money and buy those Paint Guns!!!!!:lol: Don't tell em I said That. They'll hate the WOG!!!!:facepalm:

Well, I took the gun apart and cleaned the crap out of it.....also went at the fan pattern and material spray the other way....Opened them bothe all the way up and dialed it back.....I think the resuls are way better today, shot the transom and sides.....

Ahhh...the highs and lows.....went out today, had some free time, applied filler in spot all around the sides of the hull. couple hours later, come back to sand.....what the heck is going on here brand new disk gummed up.....put a new disk on, same thing.....it seems as if the primer is all the way cured.....hope im not in trouble here, the can says fully cured in 24 hours @ 77 deg. Well the weather has been very nice temp wise here, think it might gave gotten to 77 yesterday for the high...... 60's at night

My prayer here is that it is just not cured yet, not something else. With that in mind, I have cranked up the 175 K BTU heater, closed the doors and turned on the fans to circulate the heat in there.....



Hope this helps....its 95 deg in there right now.

Hopefully its just the temps. getting the ratios correct is critical to catalyzed primers / paints. My guess is the hot temp activator you are using didn't like the cold weather, I think you said you were using 90 degree.

Hey Wog, thats exactly what Im saying, the paper was loaded up with grey gum......ratio was 4-1, I mixed 16 oz primer to 4 oz of reducer. 20 oz total. I was using 120 grit and im am going to watch the link now.....

Yeah, from what I learned from Archbuilder when I did my boat with the EasyPoxy, the different Temp reducers can make a big difference. By heating up the Go-Rage you might get it to "Kick" Hopefully So!!! Also if you lay it on to thick it can take an inordinate amount of time to cure cuz it will dry on top but it traps the solids below and they are still somewhat liquified and will take longer to cure. At least that's what the Tech Sheet says.

Archbuilder IS the Guru on this stuff so, just listen to him and follow his lead. All you have to do is look at "Miss Morgan" and you KNOW he KNOW'S!!!!

Well baking the hull last night, didnt work......attempted to sand this morning and this is what happened 3 seconds into sanding....




Spent the rest of the day peeling, scraping and sanding the transom and 2 sides....what a giant PIA!!!!!!!



its strang, not exactly sure what happened, but I did not trust the primer to cure at some point........So, 3 steps back today....disappointing, but stuff happens I spose.

That sucks, have you tried calling DuPont to see if they can tell you what the issue might be? It might be worth a try, that is really strange. The only time I have had a problem like that is when I used the wrong catalyst on some epoxy, that was a huge gooey mess! Usually that type primer fires right off and you can sand away in an hour.
