Complete re-build and I do mean complete from top to bottom...Pistons, rings, power packs, power head, new drive shaft, lower unit and water pump etc. Detailed and painted. Washed and flushed at each use, stored on a trailer and never put a ding on the ss prop. Regularly change out the gear oil and find no evidence of water or metal shavings in the old oil and no evidence of oil leaks. I have put 850 hrs on it since Feb 2007. Rarely run at WOT and generally cruise at no more than 3800-4000 rpms. Fantastic motor and has served me well for the last 5 years. Am I running on borrowed time and other than the water pump what might I expect with regard to wearing it out etc. Good to 1200 or more hrs ?? Thanks...Don

The only thing that will hurt that motor is heat. Impellers are cheap so, I'd replace it every 300-400 hours (or so) and keep an eye on the gear oil. Sounds like you take good care of it.

Makes sense.... Thanks....I really should get the impeller replaced soon........Fishing season is about to shut down here so might be a good time to see about it....... I did have a thermostat replaced in Nov. 2008 but looks like it is still functioning ok and I do have a temp alarm in place.

Can you do the work yourself? I'd suggest getting the Repair Manual for your motor. It will walk you through the process and save you some $$. No "special tools" needed (that I know of). Otherwise, just keep doin' what you're doin'. Keep one eye on that pee stream and make sure the temp alarm is working. You've got a serious motor there and it would be a shame to cook it after all that work you've done.

Impeller replacement is very easy, dropping the lower end id easy, the hardest part is getting the shift linkage bolt out and back in, it is just tricky is all, not really hard, i just did one on my 115 johnson all by myself

You have a great motor and it sounds like you are taking care of it. I agree with others about the waterpump change, it is easy and if you just replace the impellar (housing and plate in good shape) it is cheap. I average a change about twice a year since I put 500-600 hours a year on my 115hp. you should have no problems getting a couple thousand hours on that motor if you don't overheat it.

I have exact same engine. E100WTLCRS. I would like to see photos of your engine rebuild. Show off under the cowl. Great looking boat restore by the way. If you ever repower let me know and I will buy the old one.

I just might try the pump myself as they want like 300.00 + In the mean time I'll keep an eye on the stream

Looks great. For people rebuilding if you did lots of close up under cowl it will help. Where did this wire run?

Re: My 1984 Erude 100hp V4 Commercial...Longevity question

Another question..........On the re-build, my shop put in Champion QL77JC4 plugs..........Now since I checked the application chart for this 110 hp Comm. it listed either L78V or QL16V plugs...........Looks like I should be putting in the QL16V...........If the QL77JC4 are working is there reason to switch to the surface gap plugs ??
