Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

jackplate and splashwell drains on (i didnt care about allittle extra "mess" from the 5200, id rather have too much than not enough, although i did clean up allot of the excess with acetone).
Vestal-20120708-00528.jpg

i also invested in the aluminum transom mounting support braces from vance. only the top one is visible, but i did also buy the lower one

home sweet home
Vestal-20120708-00531.jpg

having a motor on makes it look so much more like a boat rather than a raft (please excuse the mess, it was a struggle getting this thing on today )
Vestal-20120708-00532.jpg

and here is how much clearance i know have from the swim platforms with the motor fully turned. i definitely couldve gotten away with the 8" plate, but oh well

Looking good man!!! Wow, a 175hp....and I thought my Mercury 150 was a little over kill! Lol. I am making some decent progress myself. Have 2 weeks left to have her in the water....my little girl wants a hello kitty beach party on the 28th so I gotta get busy!!! Really like the jack plate...that will get that motor way back in good water. Talk about a hole shot.

What is the MFG HP rating for your boat? Have you checked with your insurance to see if overpowering your boat will affect the coverage on it? In Oklahoma it makes your coverage Null and Void.

the boat is rated for a 150 based on 1991 specifications (prop rated). everything i have seen says this motor was crank rated for 175, which would put the prop rating right at the 150 that the boat was rated for

if i could find an inline 6 115 merc i wouldve jumped on it, but this johnson fell in my lap so i plan to make good use of it. my goal to have it in the water for the 4th went out the window when recovery from surgery took longer than expected. hoping to have this thing in the water by the end of the month

i hope you make your date for your daughter!!

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

My boat came with a force 150hp ....but my mercury 150 has a 2.4l back half instead ofof a 2.0l and a 150hp intake so technically it makes it a 175. I would just change cowling stickers to a 150 and no one would be the wiser. In my opinion building the boat stronger than factory speed is your only limiter to a degree. I wanted hole shot for water sports....so I have a 5 blade SS 19 pitch. Although at 7800 rpms it starts to Chine walk.

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

had to build a trim piece for the rear to wrap around the swim platform.

rough pieces screwed together
Vestal-20120712-00543.jpg

just another angle
Vestal-20120712-00544.jpg

PB into place and screwed down
Vestal-20120713-00546.jpg

sanded down and PB again to level it out better
Vestal-20120713-00548.jpg

had an issue where i test fitted the hatch and the latch was going to hit the middle cupholder, so i quick cut another piece of wood to mount as a baffle to push the hatch out more. everything glassed in

Looking great man!!! Lol...the sides of your top cap look just like mine! Why is it the first place you grab when having resin residue on our hands is the top cap?? Lol.

Thanks bud. I know! So frustrating. Even when I was careful I made a mess. So I think I will clean it up as much as I want this year (aka sand excess off), and then next year when I paint the cap and hull I can match it to the rest of the white I am doing to the boat now.

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

painting is done. got all the color done in a day. i was nervous but i like how it came out.

DISCLAIMER: some people are going to like it and some are going to hate it. its different and unique and i like it

first i mixed up a funky green color and used a scrub brush to apply it
Vestal-20120716-00557.jpg

it looks like a kindergartener was doing hand painting ha
Vestal-20120716-00558.jpg

then i mixed a darker blue and applied that over top with a wisk brush and removed the floor covering to see what it would look like with the white floor

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

after allot of debate and sending a ton of pictures to people i decided to pass over on a white floor and do a color. i decided to mix a blue that was lighter then the blue i used on the sides. i stood in the ski locker, rolled out a thick coat for a base and then used the texture roller to add grip. originally i was trying to maintain a white stripe/border around the perimeter but that idea went out the window. so this is what i ended up with today. sorry for the crappy night pics. i need to apply pva tomorrow to promote the full cure

Thanks! Its the advantage of having that extra small hatch just forward of the locker. I did all the painting in the locker, then steped into the forward hatch opening, then climbed into the bow storage and hopped off the bow.

Woke up this morning and it wasn't quite fully cured. Temps dropped abit lower last night then they were suppose to. I think I'm going to climb in and use a heat gun to promote the cure and then cover it in pva. I'd hate to have to pull this all back up again

The gelcoating really wasn't THAT bad. I think the splater effects I did made it allot easier too bc it helped hide allot of the imperfections I have been worried about. I'm pretty happy with it all

Re: my 1991 capri rebuild

this is what it looked like this morning as it is drying. i absolutely love the colors on the sides. the green i mixed dried awesome and the blue compliments it very well in person. i also think i made the right decision doing color on the deck instead of white. someone mentioned adding some white streaks to the floor but i dont think its necessary. i think once all the seats and hatches are in it will break this up pretty nicely. the colors may force me to reupholster the fabric is a blue of some sort rather than the green that was in it when i got the boat, but we will cross that road later

Wow, I just finished reading the entire thread. Awesome job. That blue green splash pattern really surprised me. I was not expecting anything like that. I can't wait to see this all done.

By definition it is overpowered. I'd highly recommend you check your state Regs and with your Insurance Man. Would not want you to have an accident and find out that you had no coverage and could be held liable due to having an overpowered boat. It has happened in my state not sure about NY.

I don't think a few more hp's would make much of a difference, I would be more concerned about the added weight torque on the transom and the way it sits in the water.
Looks good. Even better with seats and trim.
