My 1986 19ft Bayliner capri has a 5.0 volvo and i just traded a 19ft 1978 Baja runabout for it. I started it outside the water and it ran o.k. untell it warmed up. Then it started to run very rough and blew alot of smoke. The water looked brown when coming out of the motor. The trade is not complete yet, but i think this boat is a little safer because its walls are higher than the baja. please help me. My qouestion is, Why does it smoke after it warms up?

1st Guess,........

The Choke is Stuck,+ it's running Rich after warm up......
If the Smoke is Black anyways....

A Compression,+ Leak-down Test will give you a Pretty Good evaluation of the motor's general Health.....

Have you checked for Rot in the Transom,+ Stringers on that old Bilgeliner,.......
High Sides won't do much Good,.... If the rest of the hull is Rotten......

You otta atleast Splash it,+ Go for a Ride before you complete the Swap..........

The smoke is more like steam. alot of steam. coming from all different places out the back. What is a leak-down test

sounds like a blown head gasket or more, get a mechanic to check it out. are you in the mood for new engine or rebuild? this may not be a good boat. Is your boat in good shape? what is better about the baja. which boat is in better shape?

You could see a lot of steam just because the impeller was bad, or the exhaust manifolds are plugged up, or the thermostat is bad, or there is an airleak on intake side of the raw water cooling. Possibly at the drive water hose connection. Could be overheating causing the running problem. Could also be leaking manifolds or risers or the connection causing water to leak into the engine at idle. It happens if plugs are fouled or valves are leaking a bit and water gets sucked back into the engine. Tuneups, compression tests, leakdown tests, need to be done. If you don't have an OEM manual and aren't mechanically inclined and understand what I have said, then you need to find a qualified marine mechanic to at least see what is good and what is bad on your engine.

As far as what I'd do, your answer is below.

The bayliner has good interior but rotten floor. the baja is older and not as new.

The engine problems are the least of the worries on the Bayliner.

Re: My 19ft 1986 Bayliner Capri 5.0 smokes and runs badly after it warms up

what do you mean? Isn't a rotten floor easy to fix? The haul of the bayliner is good. ( i think ) The bayliners stern drive was very hot. But it is a very beautiful boat. See, I am 22 and i dont have alot of money. I have been restoring an old 1978 baja runabout 5.0 for about 8 months. Then the bayliner was offered to me for $1,500. I figure if i sell my Baja and by the bayliner, I would be alot better off. The problem is, summer is approaching and i must get to lake havasoo for spring break. (chicks) The bayliner has folding beds and a kick-butt stereo. but all that wont do any good if she doesnt go vroom vroom, around beautiful babes.. he he please help advize me of what to do. Thank you

Your gonna find a lot more rotten than just the floor, ie, stringers, motor supports, and transom is most likely rotten also. On top of that you have engine and possible drive problems. :^

Hey, this guy needs some serious help and fast. I respect a man that has his priorities straight. And before you think I'm kidding, have you been to Havasu for spring break? 8)

BTW, I'd stick with the Baja for this reason too. Havasu chicks know their rides man . . . BTW, welcome to iboats CMort!!!

Edit: No comments DWJ. Just trying to help a poor hormone influenced guy out.

hahahaha, you guys are great. but seriously... O.k. lets say i want to keep the bayliner. how would i check to see if there was more rotten than parts of the floor. and another thing; the floor is wood, the rest is fiberglass (i think) fiberglass doesnt rot, does it?

Ayuh,....

The Floor is Wood,........
As well as the Stringers,.... And the Transom......
And, the Hull needs to be Totally Stripped to replace All the Rotten Wood......

The Only way to See just How Bad it's Rotten, And I'm SURE that it is, Is to Remove the Floor,....
Then you'll be Removing the Stringers,+ Transom........

there's No Way you'll be Boating in that Bilgeliner before Spring Break,......
There's about a Month of 8hr. days involved in Rebuilding that Hull.........
And,......
At That Point,.......... You'll Still have a Junk Driveline.....

And,.......
Any Sweetie who Knows anything about Boats,.......
Would rather be riding in Any hull besides a Bilgeliner................

So,...........
If you've got Any Sense,......... At All,......... Keep the Baja................

I agree 100%. A rotten floor is just one sign of a real can of worms. If the floor is soft, you can bet, everything else under it is just as bad-or worse. Don't walk, RUN away from that boat.

Ditto!

The floor has air space above and below it, stringers, motor supports, bulkheads and the transom sit and soak for years if the hull is not properly built.

By the time the floor rots, the rest of the wood in the hull is completely history.

$1500 would not be a bad price for this boat if it didn't need SOO much work. You said that you don't have a lot of money.

This boat is a BAD purchase.

Even if it were free I doubt you could fix and keep the cost down anywhere close to the value of the boat.

Keep the Baja or find a different boat to trade on.

keep the baja. save yourself a headache

you will need wood for frame members, plywood for floor, lots of fiberglass and resin. carpet, and tons of engine and outdrive work. also do you have a place to work on it, a hoist to pull the engine? the tools?
alot more work than is realized

DO NOT GET THE BAYLINER. Remember your boat runs that bayliner will cost a couple thousand just to get the motor & outdrive working good, let me guess it has a OMC 5.0 COBRA . I just spent $1,200 on my 1987 Rinker just for the shift cables , Impeller, thermostat, tune up & oil change & gear lube change. yes i have a OMC 4.3 Cobra, if i new what i do now i would get a boat with a Mercrusier outdrive. so i say stick with what you have for now. It runs.
