My 4 5 merc (1cyl) Wont Start

It all started by me hearing the motor starting to putter while it was at mid throttle in gear. So I cleaned the carbs, let them soak, and looked up some info on spec for correct settings. Now it wont start. Its in N I put brand new gas in it today. I checked the plug, it was a little dirty so I cleaned it. still wont start! PLEASE HELP!! Its pull start.

Have you checked for spark?

Have you checked to see if it is getting fuel, or better yet, spray a good spray of fuel/oil mix in the sparkplug hole and try to start it and see if it lights off.

So I bought a new plug and sprayed some carb cleaner in the plug hole and it wont fire up. I want to check for spark but I have to remove the cowling just about everytime I try something. any suggestions on how to go about checking for spark while leaving the top on? I was thinking of just leaving it off and hooking some rope to the flywheel???
