Thanks for jumping in on that point. I had not thought about the PT wood on the transom.

I think it would be better to laminate a couple pieces of 3/4" plywood together and then cut to size for transom wood replacement. I bought a 1964 Duratech Orien at the end of the summer, and plan on replacing the transom with plywood in the spring. I also plan to seal the transom wood with fiberglass resin before installation.

Why do you think it would be better? 2x12 is stronger, nothing to glue together and will last longer.

I'm pretty sure that because it is laminated, plywood is stronger than a piece of 2X12. Most transoms are made out of plywood or some type of laminate. Do a search on "transom replacement" and I think you'll notice that most replacements are made of plywood.

I'm just going by what I've read over the years.

The best thing to use is marine plywood...which is expensive.

Laminated marine ply is the way to go and will be much stronger then a single 2x12.

On the HP, don't go crazy. I have a 75HP (MAX 85) on my Orion and it goes fast enough that you have to think about what you are doing when it's trimmed out.

Also don't forget that they changed how they measured HP (crank vs prop) so your new motors are going to be a bit stronger HP for HP then those that were out there when these boats where new.
