I purchased a 1991 Grumman 18' Fish n Fun boat with a Evinrude 70 HP hanging off the back.
I bought THIS boat for 2 reasons, 1) the 70 HP HAS to be pretty good on fuel, and 2) this is a more "pure fishing boat" than my 20' cuddy.
It has the VRO fuel delivery system.
I read good and bad things, but most bad I've been able to pick apart as another problem that was blamed on the VRO.
I just read a GOOD acticle on the VRO from, http;//continueswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html.
Expains what as a mechanic and a fustrated would be engineer needs to know what is going on and how it all works.
My concern is this.
The motor runs at 50:1 mix at WOT.
Understandable.
But 99% of the time I want to run at low RPM, (trolling st 2-2.5 mph)
This should be at a 100:1 mix., (I've had trials bikes that run 100:1 as well as a Yamaha "kicker" motor on my sailboat)
Will running at idle or a bit above over long periods burn a piston cuz it lean?
Has anyone ever ran a VRO motor like I want to?
I could just unhook it and run 50:1 in the tank, (he give a great maintenance advice on oil tank and fuel, that really when he says it, makes perfect sense), but it's running great now, (I've yet to really use it, just a few quicks trips out and back to see how it ran.
It's a system that motorcycles, snow mobiles have used for a long time and as all things mechanical, "when it works, it works great, when it breaks, well...."
Thanks!
Joe
