Re: My '72 Starcraft 18' SS 140 Mercruiser Project

I met the guys at the shop with the $240 quote. Their price is for the whole kit. I could assemble the needed tools I suppose, but there are some other things I want them to check on. These are the same fellows who wouldnt sell me a new thermostat as after their hot water test they told me I didnt need one. They will also flush the system out, etc. the $240 is for the whole shooting match.

Congratulations on the successful splash! The 2014 SOTY field is already starting-off strong! :D

Never changed an impeller on an I/O but if it's anything like an OB, roll-up your sleeves and use that money for sunscreen & umbrella drinks! 60-degrees! :p

Well that's a first. I have never once driven off with the plug connected. Twice yes, but once, nope.

that is actually one of the few stupid things I've not done. Chains on yes, light harness no.

Nice work Gam! Amazing that you're launching and most of the US and Canada are in a deep freeze! That's too cool --- or should I say warm!!!

Rock on man!!

Nice splash! I understand your delema. I too had an 18 SS and it was a diagonal fit in my 20*20 garage. My 16 SS fits great but you do loose on interior room. However, the 16 is a good boat. Its easy to trailer, launch and just overall an easy boat.

I am bringing the boat in tomorrow for the impeller work and I thought I would post a couple of pictures. Finally got the name on the boat.image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Sounds good to me. It's nice to see a dealer/mechanic that really tests things instead of just throwing parts at it. Actually, he stopped you from throwing parts at it. :) I see she goes "under the knife" tomorrow. Has it warmed up enough for a Knotty Girl ride this weekend?

I dont think we will be going out for at least a couple of weeks. Would like to see tHe temp in the high 70s. For here, that shouldnt be too long. Seeing as how it seems to run just fine when higher than an idle, the high temp at idle is probably the impeller. Even though it supposedly is only two years old, anything here in the desert left outside will pretty much fall apart.

60 degrees, palm trees, and liquid water. sounds like the good life to me. you really went through her like a dose of salts, too......how many weeks total was that?

maybe you need to cut a Starcraft-bow shaped hole in the garage door? ;)

Something caught my eye... The combo bow light is being blocked by the trolling motor mount. If you take the boat out at night that's going to be an issue as people approaching from starboard won't get a clear view of the "green" light, or it may be obscured from view all together.

Post mounted bow lights are available, or separate lights mounted on either side of the trolling motor would resolve the problem too.

Or relocate separate lights to either side of the windshield. I had to do that to have them remain visible when I added an anchor bow roller. I actually think it's a better arrangement than a combination bow light. The lights are visible and out of the way of any danger. - Grandad

That's where I put them on my boat, sides of the consoles, out of the way and protected so they don't get broken.

You guys are so observant! Yes, I am aware of the bow light being obscured. As this is a trailer queen that we intend to only use on Lake Havasu, we wouldnt be going out at night. The admiral tried to expand the garage door last year when we were down here. The procedure was to back car out of garage with the door still closed. This only added an inch or two to the garage depth though.

A friend of mine once had a boat with one of those trolling motors that attaches to the outdrive. Now that would be ideal, but there were very pricey. Now I see one for sale on Craigslist cheap. Oh well.

To your question on restoration time, it took me two months, averaging maybe a cluple of hours a day. Obviously this boat wasnt a basketcase to begin with and didnt require replacing transom or other structural repairs.

I am on the lookout for a 16 footer still. I dont see any restored Starcrafts for sale on my searches on Craigslists around the country. Has anyone sold one and what range of value do they bring?

Most of the tin getting moved around & sold, that I'm aware of, are Jas in Michigan(some SC, some non-SC), and DozerII & Budski in Canada. At least sold as 'finished', completed projects, not in process projects.

Not sure the pricing in either areas is very relevant to your market in Az.

Actually, now that I've thought about it, there was a guy that sold his tin resto (16 or 18ft closed bow, big ole' Merc OB, blue stripe, white hull, dark wood trim @splashwell & the ski pylon he installed) and bought a glass boat. Can't pull his name outta the ether though, but I think he was in Az. It's been more then 15 or 16 mo, so it may not be a good gauge either. Do a search for the SOTY 2012 or 2011 thread, I'm pretty sure his boat was nominated.

I kinda figured that wouldn't be a good gauge, didn't Charlie sell it to a buddy? And not quite completed? But I could be wrong, still can't remember the guy I referenced. :watermelon: Need more caffeine....
