Here's my first boat 1982 glastron sx190. I was searching craigslist for months for my first boat, i wanted something that needed work. This boat had popped up, i went and looked at it and fell in love. The lines on this boat just stuck to me and i love it. Ive been around boats my whole life and siked to finally own my own. I was told there was water in the oil and would need headgaskets, floors were redone and the outdrive was rebulit at his local marina (i was given the recipt for this). Well im not even gonna replace the headgaskets, ive decided to repower with a 350. i also decided to pull the carpets and check things out...... this is the fun part. New floor was installed over old rotted floor. Im siked to take this project on, ive read a ton of threads on rebuilds so i know the intel is here....Here's some pics and i will update as i go along..

Day i brought her home

What have you done to ensure the Stringers and Transom are "Good to Go"???? With the deck being an overlay of badly rotted wood, I would be seriously questioning that the stringers and transom were solid. Only core samples will tell you the truth.

Re: My 82 Glastron somewhat resto

I drilled a couple small holes in the stringers and they are dry, there isnt any rot, i have to clean the rest out still. The transom looks like that was redone by a professional, Ive done a "poke" test with and seems dry. Ill get a better idea once i get the motor out. Ive read a couple of threads about floors, i think im gonna go the cheaper route, ive priced out MDO which isnt to bad. Whats the cheaper way with sealing the wood? epoxy?

Re: My 82 Glastron somewhat resto

So i did alittle more cleaning this weekend. The stringers are all glassed in and seem really soild. Im getting ready to pull the motor in the next couple of weeks. il take more pics when im up there. Ive decided to use an exterior grade plywwod from lowes instead of the mdo or marine plywood. Im trying to save as much money as possible with this project ( car projects ive done have gone WAY over budget lol) as i can. What would be the lesser of an expense with sealing the deck with? polyurethane? or rustoleum paint? also what should i seal the edges of the deck with to the sides? would glassing the edges be ok? i plan on putting all new carpet in. i will be garaging the boat and always covering it. Im pretty new with the boating thing any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Poking and prodding will NOT tell you anything bout the stringers and transom. YOu Must drill into them in several places, down as low as you can and see what the drill shavings tell you. If they are light tan and dry then OK, if dark brown and damp then you will have to replace them. Same with the transom and motor mounts. Don't be surprised if that's what you find. Your pics indicate to me you have more issues than you think.

Re: My 82 Glastron somewhat resto

From what ive drilled so far they have been light in color and dry. I will definately drill lower. And when i pull the motor i will inspect the transom really well. i guess these were known for transom issues. If i find them damp, are they worth replacing or should i junk the boat? The hull is in good shape. The P/O had just paid $1100 to have the outdrive rebuilt ( i have the receipt with warranty). I think the boat is worth saving. Thanks for you input

Hey, that looks just like my old boat. I loved that thing. Check out my sig for my restoration of her.

I hate to tell you bro, but by looking at that picture, and by previous experience with Glastrons, you will have to do the transom, deck , and stringers. I have never seen and interior that bad, and it not need it. It also looks like she has been painted.

The good news is that boat is super easy to work on.

Ive read your resto front to back a few times lol your boat was beautiful.. The boat has definately been repainted. It doesnt look that bad in person. Were your stringers glassed in? are they usually glassed in?

Yep his stringers and most are glassed in but they still rot. You need to check the motor mounts really well too!

Wood is right on the money. That interior picture tells us a lot, but like I said before, that boat is easy to work on. I bought a junk one fore some parts, and took the whole cap off. It was super easy. I like the color.

Nice boat don't junk it. Fix it and do it right. If u r pulling the motor and the floors I would replace the stingers and make for sure the transom is not rotted. When u pull the motor I would jut pull the lower and housing to make sure transom is not bad. Also glass the new floor top and bottom. If u take the time and do it right the first time u will never have to worry about it again.

Welcome to the drydock, thrttlebkhtrod...

Just came aboard to check out your restoration...darn nice lookin boat!

Hey, just to throw my hat in the ring...I don't have near the experience of the heavy hitters that have already come aboard here...but I definitely agree 100% with their advice...

Check all the structure REALLY good, and do it right the first time, and you will end up with a super nice, super solid, super safe boat, that you will be proud to own for many, many years.

Good Luck and have fun!

Thanks alot guys i appreciate the input. I really want to fix this boat up and do it right. if this week goes good, i think ill pull the motor this weekend and really evaluate everything. Ill post more pics as i go along. So should i do everything as far as the decking etc in the exterior grade ply?

You can do it all, the stringers, transom and decking with one of several grades of plywood...
1-Arauco Plywood, excellent choice, tends to be somewhat less expensive
2-AC Fir plywood, really good second choice to Marine Grade
3-other grades of exterior plywood, but they tend to contain more voids
4-Marine Grade, can get expensive

All of the wood will end up being completely encapsulated in fiberglass resin and cloth/mat...

Done properly will last for decades...

Re: My 82 Glastron somewhat resto

I went to lowes today to get some ideas with pricing etc.. the Arauco ply is an exterior grade plywood that is pine correct? So i can use any brand of exterior grade plywood, esp if im going to glass everything and just put carpet over it... I really like the look of full carpeting over the snap in type..

Re: My 82 Glastron somewhat resto

Yep, Ext. Grade ply uses Waterproof glue. the great thing about Arauco over the Other kinds is that it has almos zero voids in the plys and it is 7 ply not the typical 5 ply. Lot's better quality IMHO.

Re: My 82 Glastron somewhat resto

I did notice the 7 vs the 5 ply.. the Arauco is a nicer wood. I can be alittle indecisive with little stuff like this, i need to stop being cheap over $7-$10 a board. LOL

Motor mounts can look okay.

But, in reality look like this after using a vacuum to suck out the rotten wood on the other side!

Make sure you check EVERYTHING very well. The is absolutely no reason to skimp and save a few dollars when you are already there...
