Well I own a 76 15hp motor and now recently I just got a 87 9.9. Today was the first run I have had with the 87 9.9 since I just completed overhauling the carb and replacing the impeller and the water pump seal.

The 87 9.9 seemed real comparable to my 76 15. I was surprised. How close are these motors performance-wise?

When did they start rating the power at the prop and not at the powerhead? I was thinking that might have been the issue, but I was really surprised of the torque and get up and go of the 9.9. The 15 does just seem to top out a little bit more.

Not much though...I guess I need to get a gps and test the mph. The prop pitches are the same I believe.

I asked this question once, and the answer I got was sometime in the early 80's, and it depended on the model as to the exact year.

Re: my 9.9 vs 15

I was interested in this issue because I was hoping the 09 Yamaha 15 2 stroke would have about the same power as my 1975 Evinrude 25 hp. It doesn't have quite the power, but it is close enough that the benefits (it is easy to pulll start and idles well) outweigh the drawbacks, at least for me. I have arm and shoulder problems and had a very difficult time pull starting the Evinrude. Ethanol killed the Evinrude on vacation in Florida so I went ahead and bought the Yamaha. I need to rebuild the carbs and sell it on e-bay.
