Re: My 90HP Pics

At first I wasn't sure what part of the engine I was looking at in the last pic. I think your showing an extreme close up of where the power trim cylinder end would mount?

It would apear that somehow some problem occured with the power trim and it has been removed? The big split in that mount can't be good.

If you plan on running that motor without the power trim system then you will need something to hold the motor down - otherwise when you shift into reverse the motor will start raising itself.

The non power trim motors had a latch to hold them in place. The power trim motors used the hydrolic(sp) cylinder to hold the motor in place. You may want to look around for a good parts motor with a complete center section - grab what you need from it then sell the rest.

The rest of the motor look's to be in good shape for a 25 year old power of tower.

Re: My 90HP Pics

Mnemonic, Let me guess, you run in salt water, correct? Your best bet is to replace the "triple clamp" with one from the junk yard. The part should be readily available since I think it was the same fro many years for all 4 and 6 cylinder models.

It is a bit of work though. I had my mounting shaft crack under the PT&T lower mount. I was able to weld it though.

That is cast iron or cast aluminum. Find out from Merc which one and have a local shop weld it for you. Ask them for it to be "paint ready" when you p/u. Prime and paint and you should be good to go

Re: My 90HP Pics

Thanks for the advice guys.

It is a power trim motor, but the trim cyls were removed due to a leaky pump and 1 bad cyl.

I do NOT want to replace the mount, and i have another whole midsection from a 115, but that one has a crack in the same spot. I guess I'll get the motor mounted on the boat and then tow it over to a welder and have it welded.

Thanks again!

Re: My 90HP Pics

Mnemonic, The triple clamp is forged aluminum I believe. I had one welded that had a crack near the steering swivel. It cracked again, when I pumped up the swivel grease fitting.

You may want to reconsider replacing the triple clamp. It does not look like it is a candidate for welding. (at least to me)

I am not a welder but have been told that you can not reliably weld cast materials. Something about the trapped impurities in the material that contaminate a weld joint. Anyone else confirm or deny this ?
