I have a 82 model Charger Bass boat. It came with a 85hp Chrysler motor that worked for me just great up to the point that it ran with no water pressure. Ouch. I bought a 97 model Mercury motor from a friend of mine and installed it myself. What a difference. It has a 21 pitch four blade prop and a 5.5 inch off set jack plate as well. I have a problem with the steering, it pulls hard to the left at slower speeds (10-45 mph). I have the trim tab adjusted as far as possible and at 5100 rpm with it trimmed up I can find a happy medium. If I trim higher it starts to go right and trim lower its back to pulling hard left. The old motor had no pull either way, it turned fine. On a side note my buddy said it was hard to steer on his boat and since we put a Yamaha 150 on his Champion it steers like a dream. Hence one would say the Mercury is the culprit. I have looked at the skeg closely and no signs of any damage. The motor looks like it has 10 hours on it, like new. Could it just be motor torque and I have to get used to it? I have only had the boat out 4 times since the install and I could tweak some more jack plate but I have it about 1 inch above the bottom and I have had it lower but has not seemed to effect the steering at all. I can live with it because I’m back on the water. It just that when I let my wife drive it wears her out, and get scary at high speed.
I have double checked the mounting. I used a transom jig and it measures dead center and straight. I have got to be over looking something, but on the other hand. First motor swap for me and new motor. Any ideas?

Thanks, Ken

Re: My arms hurt

You might want to consider an "antifeedback" steering system. Better yet, a hydraulic system... $$$

I have thought about that, but is expensive. I will add that the boat it came off of had dual steer and mine has sigle. Am I asking for disaster or will single cable steering hold this motor?

Thanks, Ken

Re: My arms hurt

I would be guessing that the little tab on the anti vent plate needs a "tweeking" just remember that when it is adjusted it steers the motor not the boat ,if you get what I mean, look at it from the rear and adjust it so it is turning the motor to offset the drag on the steering, you say it pulls left, the tab needs to be adjusted so the rear is moved to the right!

OH and do it a bit at a time as a little can do a lot when it is doing 30MPH under water

I second the trim tab on the cav plate behind the prop. It is there to alleviate exactly what you are experiencing.

Adjust the trailing edge of the tab in the direction of the pull.

You do not say what HP, the Merc is. Generally single cable sytems are good for 150 HP or less. However, you have a set back and lots of positive trim. THat puts extra stress on the cable.

Re: My arms hurt

I have it as far as it will go. The back end of the tab is to the port. It helped greatly but not enough. I may just take it to the boat shop and have a second eye to look at it. Is it possible to over do it? As hard as it was pulling I just went all the way with it right off and haven't tried to come back with it a little to see if it gets harder again.

Ken

Re: My arms hurt

I have some of the same issues with my boat. I also have a jackplate. It is because with the jackplate and setback the tab is out of the water when running and so is doing little or nothing. They make tabs that can be bolted to the bottom skeg for this problem. Either that or lower the motor or get hydr. steering.

Re: My arms hurt

One thing I forgot to mention. I found it funny when I took the old motor off the transom. It was the original motor, and it was mounted a good inch and a half to the port side from center. Did they know something I don't or just a dealer slapping a motor on with no concern? It did steer straight. Hmmmmmm, Just a thought.

Ken
