WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!? Don't you know that Bayliner will rot out from under you, run bad, corrode and be worthless? Can't believe you trust it enough to camp in it. Wow.

Just kidding of course- she looks great and I envy anyone whose wife/kids will sleep on a boat with them. That would be a dream come true for me.

With the trim tabs working right I'm thinking you need to get that whale's tail thingy off the drive

I agree about the whale tail, it kind of works against the Trim Tabs.

Nice boat, looks like a great anchorage!

or does it just come off & get put away?

what is it / was it for anyways?

Re: My Bayliner Classic Cruiser 2452

The "Whaletail" is also known as a hydroplane and a few other trade names, and is affixed to the out-drive or lower unit of an outboard in order to create more lift. They are used to plane faster and at lower speeds.

While they are inexpensive compared to remotely controlled Trim Tabs they cannot adjust the amount of lift they produce nor correct for side to side changes in the boat's attitude. Unlike Trim Tabs they cannot be retracted when you don't need them and always produce drag.

The power trim on your stern drive should be adjusted for best RPM/Speed while using the Trim Tabs to get the best attitude. Any benefit of the Whaletail is no longer needed and you are just dragging it through the water now and all it is doing is robbing speed.

So, consider taking it off over the winter and put it away, or on E-bay :)

That Whale Tail is a stingray hydro stabiliser and it works very well on these boats, I know, I own one. I have Bennett trim tabs and know how to use them but that whale tail as you call it makes all the difference in the world. The boat planes faster and stays on step at lower speed and gets better fuel milage. I know this as I have tryed it both with and without, I know 3 other people with these boats , we all run the Stingray. :)

Dan, she has trim tabs. You don't need the whale tail with tabs.

Great picture, my wife and I have the same boat and love it, we stay aboard for a week at a time. When we can get the time off.

The 2452 Classic is a nice boat. Good use of space and good styling. I very nearly bought one before I purchased my C*C, but the one I was looking at had a wet transom.

Enjoy yours!

I see your location is Adirondacks. Is that Sacandaga, Champlain, the river or where?

Very nice looking boat & camp site! That's about the size I'd like to upgrade to when I get the chance. Need to upgrade the tow vehicle first, though... when does this boating hobby get cheap? :D

Re: My Bayliner Classic Cruiser 2452

Hey Bruce 58, I know she has trim tabs, these boats come stock with them. The trouble is that even with trim tabs they dont like to get on step without a whole lot of nose in the air. I have owned my 2452 for 6 years and as a mechanic and an ex racer I am constantly tinkering with things to improve its performance. The hydro foil enhances the low to mid range performance and takes about 2 mph off top speed. You can achive the same effect by adding about 250 lb of weight to the bow but the performance suffers. Belive me I have done timed runs, checked time to plane and fuel milage both with and without the hydrofoil. They dont work for all boats, but for this boat and this hydrofoil it is a good combination.
