Ahoy mates!! I'm fairly new to this site and have been reading all the articles and checking out the pics. I see that this is a great place to get some advice and show off various projects. My project is a sailboat and I have been enjoying working on it for the last couple of years. I find it to be relaxing and soothing to the soul when I am working on my boat. Once I get the glass work complete I will be pulling the engine so I can rebuild it. As soon as that portion is complete and the boat can travel under its own power, I will be motoring up the Indian River to have my masts stepped. Throughout the whole rebuilding process I have used polyester resin and woven roving. I think that if the proper preparations are done (grinding back at a taper with heavy 36 grit and preping with acetone) I will get a good bond and the end result will get me where I want to go. I know that I will get blasted about not using epoxy, but I didn't think the extra cost in materials justified its use. Let me know what you think... http://www.jimgrooms.com/album.htm

Welcome to iboats!

I would have to admit that in my years here at iboats...... no one has presented an opening post like your's! It looks fantastic and you have a good touch.... not only on just "fixing" but doing beautiful work.

Once again......... Welcome!

Re: My Boat Project and pictures

Thank all of you for checking out my work. I guess a lot of my satisfaction comes from doing a good job and getting a pat on the back from those of you who know that doing this type of work is not a cake walk. Hopefully, if the weather is good (no hurricanes) I plan on having her done in the spring next year. I'll keep everybody up to speed on my progress as I slave away. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks again!!

Wow Jim... AWESOME workmanship. I'm new to boats, but have been building high power rockets for about a decade now and there can be a lot of fiberglass work in those, so I appreciate what you've done...awesome!!

Hey Dreamer, I've spent the last 10 years updating my 1971 sailboat. At first I also used polyester resin with satisfactory results (many gallons, 36 ft beast) but with age comes wisdom. So now I have switched over to epoxy and now have fantastic results. Epoxy is much more predictable and consistant, at first I didn't think that the advantage outweighed the cost but have since changed my mind. I'm sure the glass work you have done will out live you, but when you have a small project try the epoxy and you will become a covert. Good luck with your boat, when you start sailing and meet others on the water that admire it you will realize that it was all worth the effort.
