Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

Terribly sorry to hear of the incident. Theives are lazy scumbags.

One thought. Nothing will ever completely protect you - locks only make honest people more honest. But in any event, I see you have a concrete driveway. Any thought on anchoring a heavy chain in the concrete, and chaining down the trailer? Put a florescent orange flag on the coupler to remind you to disconnect it when you hook up to it. Again, not fool proof, but will slow them down more.

Good luck with the process (either getting it back, or an insurance settlement).

Sorry about the loss, but for your sake I hope they either destroy it or strip it down to nothing before TPD finds it. There's nothing like babying something for years only to have someone trash it for you and then give it back. The mere fact that it has been in someone else's hands is enough for me to hope you end up with a new boat.

Any chance you talked to the police about turning the footage over to the local news station. The local news around me takes part in the local crime stoppers and people can turn over info on crimes and they will report it on the news. It could help, you know these guys didnt go un-seen hauling a 25ft long boat down the road.

Also ask the police to check local repo companies it could be a mistake.

A small bit of good news, BoatUS (my boat ins provider) appears to be all over it. They have already assigned me to a claims adjuster, and a local boat surveyor who has law enforcement contacts has already called me. At least I know someone is working on it.

On the other hand, I went by the TPD station to pick up my police report and found out it hasn't even been assigned to a detective yet. I know boat theft is probably not too high on their list, but it still kind of sucks to be ranked that low. Its been over 48hrs now, the boat is probably half way around the world.

At this point you are probably way better off with a replacment boat. I don't know about you but I actually enjoy shopping for stuff like this, especially knowing that it won't be my actual money paying for it. You get a settlement from insurance and buy the boat you want to replace it. Hopefully the insurance will cover the repalcement cost.

As long as the settlement is fair and happens quickly, I agree with JimKW.

nice first post.....what realy sucks is that we can't trust each other to leave anothers property alone. We are "supposed" to be the most intelligent beings on this planet....yeah right...

Nice first post...seems like there isn't much here for you folks..seem to know it all already...

Really hard-*** in the Netherlands I guess...

A little compassion wouldn't hurt.

Edit: Let's give them another chance . . . QC

In my experience, thiefs are so common in Europe that they think that way. I'm going to say welcome to ed & inge and hope they understand that we LOVE that we still have places where we don't lock up everything. My boat has been stored outdoors without locks for two years.

I spoke with some detective buds of mine. Since there is honestly no real chance for recovery here the most they can do is put out a BOLO on it and hope a law enforcement agency comes across it.

Sorry to see that ......amazing how brazen they can be. And as far as locks and chains are concerned: with some of the new cordless tools out today, anything short of an aircraft carrier anchor chain won't make much difference.

We have tested some of the new 24volt cutoff tools and these will go thru a hardened lock shackle in less than 10 seconds and thru 1/2" Grade 70 transport chain in about the same time. Pros {and these guys sure looked that way} would have a chain/lock combo done in less than a minute. Maybe they would have looked for an easier target, but today, if they really want it, they will get it.

And by the way, I have a coupler lock and chain on the wheels of our boat...ain't going to stop a pro, but hopefully keep a casual grab and run from taking place....

Thanks a lot for the attempt anyway, I'm pretty sure I will never see it again and like JimKW and QC said, by now I don't really want it back. It was babied by its first owner and I continued the trend, each day its in the hands of these people probably shorten its life exponentially.

At first I was thinking maybe if they somehow found it before the weekend it wouldn't be so bad, then I realized these guys probably don't work m-f 9-5 like most of us, this is probably their full time job.

I think the only way this would have gone any different was if I had a MUCH better camera probably in the +$1800.00 range, or if I had LoJack. LoJack is so rare, its success is through obscurity. Its incredibly expensive to get a license plate reading capable camera, and most have a range of about 20' at the most.

That's the advantage in owning an old boat. Nobody would want to steal my 12 year old Wellcraft. That 24' Century is a nice boat I have a friend who has one. Even that I am suprised they went after, usually these professional boat thieves go after the 30+ foot Yellow fins and the likes.

Recently visited Netherlands and have a large customer there... very nice place/folks and I believe the intent was to explain the differences in Europe vs North America not to crap on diesel.

So welcome ed & inge to iboats.

I'm with QC and several others that made comments about boats/trailers unlocked, etc. Its sad that the world has come to the point where we need locks, alarms, satellite tracking, etc to enjoy the property we purchased.

Its simple. Its YOUR property, located on YOUR property so leave it the hell alone.

Diesel, read the thread and watched the video. Made my sick to my stomach watching it happen and can only imagine what you were feeling watching it yourself. Hopefully the insurance fixes you up quickly. Wish you the best.

I'd hope the thief's Excursion blows the engine or something as payback but then realized, they probably stole that before they jacked your boat.:(

Just a thought: is there a GPS tracking system available for boats like Boomerang and such for cars? Here, some insurance companies will require it for any car/truck above 40k. Obviously, this boat is worth more than that...

.:(

That is how I read it as well. Just trying to "break the ice" so to speak. I got no bad intentions from it either. So welcome ed & inge from me as well.:D

I grew up on the farm and I remember the day we finaly put a lock on the back door. A few years later we had to start locking the fuel tanks. That has only been about 23 years ago. Times have changed and not all of it was for the better:(. I admit though, I still leave my keys in the vehicles.

And as long as I'm at it, I feel the "repo" comments were out of line. First of all, the assumption that it must have a payment because it looks newer is biased and steriotypical. Also, if it had a payment book and the OP WAS late on payments, I don't think there would have been anything here said. People jump to conclusions entirely too fast.

As for deisel, I already posted about that, but since I am here, I will say it again, Really sorry for what you are going through, I don't even want to try and imagine coming home and finding my boat gone. Now my Avalanche on the other hand...

EDIT: just being proactive:D
