Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

very sorry to hear about your boat. it's a horrible thing the moment you realize something you've worked hard for has been stolen. it's one of the reasons we left tampa 14 years ago, the criminals were getting so brazen.

even though it doesn't help you, this thread has been very helpful for us newbie owners. a lot of great security information that we haven't thought of. i hope the insurance company takes good care of you and you'll be back on the water soon.

Just read this whole thread. This sucks. I think lojack or something similar would be the way to go. Sucks to pay for that and never need it but when you do and you have it...well... Cheap insurance if your toy disappears.

Any updates? Insurance?

Broad daylight! Makes my heart sink. I live way back in the woods but I'm gonna beef up my 'security'. I have a lock on my toon but bolt cutters would make short work of that. Got me really thinking. Good luck!

Sorry if I can't fall into the pack of everyone telling you how sorry I am to see this happen!

First you wax it so it's all gleaming and then roll it to the end of your driveway with the unlocked trailer hitch pointing out to the street in one of the highest states for boat theft in the country and then wonder how can this happen to you

Worse yet, you know enough to put a security camera on the driveway, but don't know enough to take a few cheap measures to at try and least slow the thieves down.

If I was the insurance company, I would decline to pay out this claim after you showed them the movie yet.

Why not just leave your boat running at the dock and just go off to eat somewhere and then be really surprised when you return to find your boat gone.

Leaving your boat like you did only serves to drive up every one's insurance rates.

Having a title in your hand (as you say) still, the way they worked so methodically, they sure looked like Repo men to me.

I forget if you mentioned it but if you don't mind who is your INS provider? Progressive? After reading bigfish's thread I hope not. Progressive also fought me really bad over an auto accident a few years ago. I am good friends with my INS writer guy. He tells me progressive is the worst about paying out claims.

Do you know anyone that writes INS policies that you could talk to? They should know all the rules and what you can do.

and everybody stop hating on the man and giving him a hard time. He lost his boat. If he did something wrong he's paying for it. What's wrong with you people. I bet if someone you care about had they're boat stolen in the same circumstances you wouldn't be telling them it's they're fault.

Obviously these guys were not first timers so almost anything he would have done probably wouldn't have helped anyways.

But like I just said. If he was negligent in any way he's paying for it. But that's what INS is for. He should still be made whole.

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

Please relax guys. I thought about deleting Exipdia's post, but it is almost civil and there are no violations. The problem with posts like that is they stir others emotions and we get retaliatory posts like LAC STS's which I am also leaving. I would love to see both of you edit each to back the heat off a little. Whatever they choose to do, let's see if we can stop the back and forth right there OK?

Also . . . Insurance threads always stir up a bunch of carp, but I think they are also educational and would like to keep this one alive and hopefully get an update from diesel. Thanks all :)

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

A MUST READ FOR BOAT ANTI-THEFT SOLUTIONS.

For everyone else who is thinking about how to keep their boat more safe, here are a few easy and cheap solutions (maybe a little redneck too).

A few options:

1.)for winterizing, some put trailer on jack stands and removed tires/rims to keep in better condition over winter. It is difficult to steal a boat with no tires.

2.)my favorite, if your boat does not move during the winter, park it in its winter resting spot and simply remove all the lug nuts. If stolen, the trailer might make it out of the driveway, if they manage to make it farther, tires are sure to fall off at the first major intersection which will draw attention for sure!

3.)cut the threads off of a hitch ball, grease and shove the ball in the tongue and lock it down, if anything this will slow them down.

4.) booby traps are great! chain the trailer to an object, ie. fence, cinderblocks...Hide the chain so that theives cant easily find or notice, when they make their get-away they will be easy to spot when they are dragging a chain link fence or concrete block behind.

5.) another booby trap! get a steel road, much like your axle shaft, run it between two tires and into a slot of the rim, after one revolution the bar will be pinned against your leaf springs and will seize the rims from rotating.

These are just a few to consider. Remember pro's can get past any security device thats on the market, they specialize in it, so dont waste your money! they clearly are not intelligent enough to make an honest living, outsmarting them should not be difficult.

ALSO, DONT forget about your own security booby traps prior to spring, you might just fool yourself into some embarresment.

That's fine I didn't post my experience to get pity, I posted it so that hopefully others will learn from my mistakes. If you had read the whole thread you would have read that I have heavy tree cover and as you noticed had just detailed the boat, so I wanted to take it out while it was clean before the tree cover ruined it again. The end of the driveway was the only place I had less tree cover. The last time I checked that was not illegal or considered grossly negligent.

Fortunately my insurance company does not agree with your logic and in fact reimbursed me for the full Agreed Value of my boat yesterday. I 100% agree I should have taken some basic security measures, but the last time I checked I didn't live in a prison courtyard, there is no law on the books that states I have to go above and beyond whatever security the manufacturer provided in order to not be held liable in the event of a loss, and the last time I checked, tongue locks, wheel locks, prop locks, and tracking devices are not factory installed security measures.

My loss has nothing to do with driving insurance rates higher, insurance companies are in the business of assuming risk, I've paid insurance on various items for over 20yrs, I am quite sure they had plenty to spare after paying for my loss.

It is very easy to criticize when you are looking at a situation with your 20/20 hindsight vision, not so easy when it happens to you. As professional as these guys obviously were, I seriously doubt anything short of a tracking device would have done much to slow them down, but I guess to you, any loss by any insured member regardless of security precautions automatically drives up insurance rates, despite the fact that insurance companies hedge risk and manage risk while still making an enormous profit.

Glad to hear you got your payout on your boat. That being said what are you getting to replace it. :)

You don't owe him any explanations. He probably doesn't even carry insurance on his boat.

Glad your insurance company helped out. Thats what they are there for...

Right now I have no idea, I thought my Century was awesome so I'm looking at Century 2200 CC's - 2600 CCs. I also found a Spectre 24 SCF CC that caught my eye but I'm trying not to look too hard until next year to keep from buying something right before winter. There's some great deals to be had right now, but I know the right decision is to wait.

I've decided no more cuddy's or WAs for me because I never used the cabin and it ended up collecting more junk than use.

Thanks Alpheus, I could not imagine if this had happened without insurance. Probably would have ended this boater's hobby for a long time.

Let us know what you end up with. I like to hear the happy ending that you will get something nicer then what you had in return for your headache.

Good to hear the insurance company took care of the loss. The feeling after being a victim of theft hangs around for a long time, but it does diminish with some time.

Looking forward to pics of the next boat.

To the OP - very happy to hear it all seems to have worked out for you and good luck in your search for the replacement. And, your response to the unclassy poster was excellent, well written and classy. You didn't owe him or anyone an explanation but it was great nonetheless.

Almost puked would make me very mad if I saw this with my rig. A lock would be a good idea atleast then they would have to use chains. I also noticed the motors in down position. If im a betting man these theifs own a inboard big boat that's old and crappy. You should beable to figure out year of the truck didnt look like diesel and reasearch with police. How many black with tan ford's are there in Florida? 2wd? How about all Black excursions that registered a boat in past! Agree with insurance companies there scumm they only do it to make money.

Don't sweat the hate, and I'm glad the insurance company didn't try to weasel some way of screwing you. Looking forward to seeing what you replace it with for sure!
