My brother picked up this Chieftan today! I haven't had a chance to see it in person yet, but it looks to be in pretty good shape. The PO apparently replaced the floor and the transom with in the last couple years, and the OMC was rebuilt closer to five years ago. Like I said I really don't have much information on it but I thought I'd share a few pics! More to come soon!

Fist bump for the bro of jbing, excellent:D

Here's hoping that Stringer Drive doesn't give him too much heartache.

Looks like someone put some money in the stinger drive & motor, so hopefully he'll get lots of use out of it & the new-ish deck & transom.

The rest looks good, so congrats to your brother!

Re: My brother's 70's somthing Chieftan!

I passed along the kudos guys! He's excited to say the least! I went over to his place last night to help him "shoe horn" it into his driveway and had a good look at it. Apparently I was mistaken about the floor. The PO did replace it, however it was stored out side without a cover. Its still usable but it will need a tear out in the future. As far as the Stringer goes, the boot and gasket look recent and in good shape. Tilt works, trim doesn't but looks to be neutral (neither in or out) so that's somewhat of a plus... And it needs a new ignition switch, they had to jump the solenoid last night to start it. So the plan today is to get her on the hose and run her for a longer duration and have a real good look at that old OMC. If everything checks out he planning on replacing the ignition and getting her on the water asap! More pics to come! So stay tuned!

its a 1979 chieftian, 120 omc cobra...? rumor has it that its a chevy 2.3L but not too sure. here is a vid of the motor... before the sparks where replaced. it is kind of funny, needed to get the rpms up to start as the plugs where horrible. then i went and got new plugs...duh! i guess i was just too excited.

The motor sounds good. Hopefully, everything works out good on the outdrive. I'm pretty sure that the motor is the 2.3 L with the OMC intake/exhaust. I think it's the same GM block.

and after the plugs. she runs smooth untill about 1000rpm and below then she sputters. first thing on my list is re check the spark gap then carb clean. all-in-all she runs great!

She'll make a good boat Jay, once you trade in the screw driver for a real key and slap a new floor on her. I can't wait to try out those down riggers / boat anchors! Speaking of the floor, what the plan / time frame? You going to rip it out before the snow flies, or work on it next spring?

Welcome to the Bro-Brohood, anderso8623 and jbing, I guess you're back in the hood by default. Now quit pickin' on your brother. LOL

That's the same motor as a MerCruiser 120 with the OMC bits, a good motor. Nice looking Chieftain. Good luck and have fun.

Oh yeah - Get a key. :D

So I traced it back to the neutral safety switch thanks to bob s and his his wonderful step-by-step trouble shooting diagram! The darn thing was not even connected! Don't know how it came undone but it is back up and running now! :)

GA I've been around, just lurking in the weeds. I still have a Jet sitting in my garage, trying to figure out what to do with it...?

Im looking forward to getting my hands dirty on this one and helping out where I can. I've always liked the Chief and Islanders and this one doesn't need a whole ton of work.

Jay, glad to hear you got the ignition sorted out. Whats next on your list of things to do?

I suppose you could kinda lay on your side with your legs sorta up in a fetal position. It'd just be hard to drive is all. And, well, see anything.

Ah well, who am I to judge??? Run it man! Let us know how it shakes out for ya!:D
