Re: My Chieftan project

Got a lot done the past couple days. Painting is finally all complete!! The bottom was done in Cream Beige. Attached the new fuel fills, fuel vents, water fill, and 2 drain fittings. Took the glass out of the side cabin window frames and applied the tint. On the top dash behind the windshield installed a sheet of the nautolex so when we toss some lures up there they won't be sliding around. Also got the top windshield installed. Will take a break from it tomorrow and get some things ordered, like fuel lines and hoses. I foresee her going together a bit faster now. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Isn't that reflection, the rivets are painted the same as the rest of the bow diamond plate, right?

Great job, really like the color scheme, SOTY is going to be a tough choice this year.

I see one more week of cold temps then I believe we start making our way to spring. The warmer days will sure help the process eh buddy:thumb:

Re: My Chieftan project

Thank you all for the comments. I am real pleased with the outcome of the painting. Yes, there are a few flaws in the paint but nothing that is bothersome, after all it is a 40+ y/o boat.

Dozer, you have that right .. there are several great looking and inventive projects happening that should be completed this year. This site sure does inspire one to continue and press on despite any challenges that they meet.

Jas I hope your right on the weather changing after this weeks coming cold spell or we may never get out til summer.

Re: My Chieftan project

Working on getting the girl back together. Had to resize the keyhole in the transom to accommodate the alpha 1 instead of the older 70's outdrive. A bit of effort for sure but finally got everything to align and plenty room for the steering arm. Now waiting on transom gasket and will get the outdrive installed. Got the top rails mounted above the cabin and then installed the side rails and of course some rod holders. We cut a piece of oak 1" thick and 3' long to put under gunwale to add strength for the rod holders. Pulled some of the rub rail back and removed the screws in the rail, then using longer screws screwed them through the rail and into the oak so now it is all tied in. Rod holders are solid and no fear of a big salmon pulling them out.

Waiting on the postal service/ups to deliver some more parts and pieces. Fuel hoses, fuse blocks, transom gasket, window channel for the side cabin windows and of course the hydraulic helm so we can get the console made up.

And of course the mandatory pics.

nice setup on the rod holders! but with properly maintained and set reel drags, really not much risk of fish pulling them out unless you're fishing with 80 or 130lb outfits. i have rod holders on my portabote simply bolted right through the side of the plastic, and they haven't even loosened up through many seasons of trolling strikes on big yellowtail and even a few sailfish.

Looking good WW!

The transom kit for Alpha 1 (1980s) and MC are the same and so is the keyhole size. So what was it that you had to enlarge the shifter cutout or is your A1 from the 90's?

Dig the rod holders W-n-W! Nice-n-Stout!

I bet it was a little painful putting holes in that new paint

Re: My Chieftan project

Water, I am changing out all the early 70's drive to a 90 unit. The old gimble unit used a flat gasket instead of the rubber ring in the newer. Researching the units I read that around 74 the keyhole changed and the upper 2 mounting bolts were raised about an inch. This is the situation that I have. The keyhole needed to be widened a tad to accommodate the the slightly wider area around the drive shaft hole casting and had to drill in the new upper bolt holes.

B2, I agree on the properly set drags. Have never lost a holder yet. I do however believe in adding strength to where they are mounted to minimize flex in the gunwales. I run wire divers which are magnum sized dipys divers run out anywhere from 100-250' out on wire line. These lines put constant heavy tension on the rod and holders. When a large salmon slams these rigs it shakes the whole boat.

Thanks Fin, yea it kinda hurt putting in the holes but that is the life of fishing.

i hear ya there. i don't even try to run the big deep-diver lures like Mirrolure MR111s and Mann's Stretch25s from the transom rod holder, because it scares me the way the pull makes the transom (of the portabote) flex!

agree with BF, yer a brave man to be able to drill that lovely paint.
