Re: My Chieftan project

Oh my, what a busy day but very productive. Parts and pieces are arriving and things are coming into place.

Fuel hoses, transom gasket, fuse box, and hydraulic steering pump. Good lord those fuel hoses were expensive ($100) and those were just the fill and vent hoses. Still have to measure and get hose for the run from both tanks to the back of the boat. Yes it is all marine approved hose as I won't sacrifice safety to save a couple bucks.

On previous post I said that I had put some nautolex on the dash. This would be a pic of it with the windshield mounted.

I stated earlier about having to enlarge the keyhole and drill a new set of holes for the transom assembly.

As you can see the new top set of holes in the transom and the light areas in the transom wood are the areas we had to carve out larger to get the newer transom to fit. The old unused pair of holes were slathered in waterproof glue then a dowel was slammed home to fill the holes. JB Weld was used to cap off the ends then used the 2 part epoxy to reseal all areas widened so all is back to waterproof condition.

New gasket installed in transom assy and set in place.

This is the shot from the inside all mounted.

Continued next post.

Re: My Chieftan project

Then we got some vinyl installed inside the cabin today.

There is some thin foam backing that was glued in then the vinyl glued over top the foam. I think it came out nicely. You may be able to see the acorn nuts on the right side.

The nuts were used to cover the screws that were used to install the horn and finish installing the side rails. With the oak we installed under the gunwales the other day certainly make these rails solid!!

Got the fuel hoses cut to length and installed on the deck fill and the vents.

It was pretty funny the day we went to get the vinyl for the inside cabin. Went to JoAnn fabrics.....yep,,,,the only 2 men in there. Boy did we feel out of place. But they had the vinyl, marine vinyl at that. We seen the sale sign for 50% off so took the roll up to get it cut. We told the ole gal that this vinyl didn't have a sale tag on it. So she escorted us back to the rack and deemed that only the upholstery vinyl was on sale not the marine vinyl. She says now go to the front of the store and grab the sale flyer and bring it back to her and there was a coupon in there for 40% off any purchase. We laughed and told her we weren't used to going in a fabric store as she was laughing at us. Oh well, for 40% off I can take the laugh.

And yes those are the original Starcraft emblems. Sprayed them black to fill the lettering then sanded them down so only the letters were black. Then clear coated them.

Enough update for today, back at it tomorrow.

Looking good, 40% off is certainly worth a laugh of 2.

Awesome accomplishments! :thumb:

So are you going to be putting the vinyl on the sides of the hull as well?

I'm liking those twin horns, was thinking of putting some of those on my chief too.

Re: My Chieftan project

Water, the vinyl will be used for the area by the cabin windows, on the front sill plate and down the front of the structural wood arch by the front window, and then maybe the thin strip under the side cabin windows. Are going to be putting a very thin nap carpet on the hull sides. I forgot to take a pic of the sample, will do that tomorrow. Trying to stay with the sandstone type colors. I think the carpet is on sale for 37c sq ft so figure for just over $50 will take care of the hull sides and the inside cabin floor.

Those twins have a great sound to them. I would have to recommend them!

Hey if you need more fuel line, NuWave Marine has the best pricing I could find.

I'd like to think I'm pretty comfortable in my manhood, but I always feel pretty awkward walking into JoAnn's. Heading in there with another dood would be even more so:whistle:

Re: My Chieftan project

Yesterday got most of the carpet put in the cabin. It runs all the way around the hull inside. Also did the boxes, no more fake wood grain vinyl on them. Need to finish cutting the carpet for the floor. I had the nautolex inside the cabin and it will stay. Plan on putting down velcro strips to hold down the carpet for the floor. Then will be able to remove it when needed and wash down the deck. Got the carpet at Home Depot for 33c sp ft. winter wheat.

Jason, got the fuel line from MichiganMotorz, went to their site to purchase it, cheaper than buying from them on Ebay. Will compare with NuWave for the rest of the lines.

Still plenty work left to be accomplished and the 5" of snow yesterday really wasn't needed. High temps for most of the week in the 20's so guess spring is still a ways off yet.

I bet that carpet on the hull inside the cabin will make it more quiet in there.

Re: My Chieftan project

Another busy day. I think we got a lot accomplished today. Got the mahogany sized and cut for the helm. Got the window channel installed in the side cabin windows and put the glass back in. Will install the windows back in the boat on Sunday. Got the engine back in the boat and bolted to the transom assy. Got the lauan for the cabin ceiling sized and cut. It will be foam padded and vinyl applied. Will use 3/4" pink foam board between the lauan and the aluminum to provide some insulation and keep it from sweating when staying in the cabin on those long weekend fishing trips. Tossed down a few icy cold brews and discussed the plan of action for Sunday and called it a day.

Tomorrow will head up to the Fishing Show in Birch Run so no work on the boat tomorrow.

Re: My Chieftan project

Dozer, a few beverages after a solid day is always in order. And yes Jason, I know the pics but did have priorities. Will have pics tomorrow. Doing 4 days right now water but will be back on 5 shortly. The extra day off helps with the build.

Well the fishing show was enjoyable as usual. Picked up a few items, a leader box to hold my leaders for the wire divers and slider lines for the downriggers, a couple more dipsy divers, 200 Mustad 3/0 siwash hooks for my spoons, and stopped by my buddy Ray's booth - Flintstone Lures and got a few more spoons for salmon slaying this season. Plus stopped by the sausage booth and got a pack of the mushroom & swiss brats. Man they are tasty.

Did I hear something about brats?

Yes you did Jason!!! Nowicki's sausage at that. Mmmmm...... boy are they good too. I would certainly offer you a couple but afraid by the time you got here they would already be down the gullet :)

The mandatory pics:

Engine in it's resting grounds.

The windows test fitted.

Today's action consisted of fitting the console to the cabin wall and cutting out for the gauges, etc. Got some parts swapped around on the engine and started fitting the shift and throttle cables. Got to gather up all my cables for my electronics that have to go thru the top of the dash then will be able to finish up the cabin ceiling. Lots yet to accomplish.
