My computer's dead :(

I can't do a normal startup but every second or third attempt it'll let me try safe mode but stops and goes blackscreen again just after the login screen comes up. I'm taking it to my computer geek tonight. I don't know how to fix it.<br /><br />I'm at work.

Format c:/ ?<br /><br />The way I figure it... if it gets to the point I can't boot... it's time for a reformat. No sense in paying a geek to do it for you.<br /><br />I back things up regularly, so I can generally be back up and running within an hour or so.<br /><br />I'm going to start cloning my drives, so if I get a major failure, all I have to do is unplug one drive and pop the other one in. <br /><br />H.

Not surprised. They say "blue screen" errors are the deadly ones. Is this recent? There were a few virus scares in the past week. Maybe you have been infected. Worse case you re-format, re-load and start from scratch! Frustrating and time consuming but with thw winter weather at least it will not interfere with boating.

Last time I had that type of a problem the hard drive was bad. It had to be replaced. I'm not saying that is your problem, but just be prepared.<br /><br />A note of warning to all: Something a college prof. I had more years ago than I really care to remember said many times, 'If you think you might need that, save it. If it is important enough to save, make more than 1 copy.'

magster when did it die? blackworm was to hit Friday and is not nice. Are there any error messages?

The PC died yesterday the 6th.<br />Well, it's still blackscreen, it'll do a partial startup, no error messages, I don't think it's a virus... I'm up to date. I couldn't get over to my buddy's (the computer geek) last night so I'll drop it off today. He's a whiz... and no doubt have it fixed today or whenever the parts are in if it needs something. If it doesn't need any parts I'm going to buy a flat screen from his store. The labor will be a freebie... that's why I bought my computer from him instead of a superstore. It costs a bit more but support your friends and they support you. <br />I have 2 hard drives and always copy the important stuff onto the 2nd. Hopefully it's ok.

Diagnosis was the motherboard failed. Half of the capacitors were swollen. With any luck it should be done tonight. Could've been worse...

Anytime one of my plethora of mechanical or electronic devices begins to give me fits, and gives up the ghost, I always exclaim, "Good---and I hope it hurt!

Oh yeah. I thought the resolution was questionable until I went to settings / control panel / display / appearence / effects and changed the screen fonts to 'clear type'. It's fabulous. There's so much room on my desk now
