Hello,

I just bought my first boat. It's a mid 80's Landau 16' Flat bottom Jon with a 1978 Johnson 6 HP and trailer. I paid $600 and am looking forward to getting out on the water. Motor is getting a "tune-up" right now and I'm hoping it'll be ready by this weekend. I'm going to make a few trips out on some lakes before venturing out on the river.

I'm curious if this thing will be able to plane or not. It's a good thing I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere fast I know, but I was just wondering about the performance out of something like this. What can I expect? I'll be a catfishing boat primarily, and means for getting me to some places to deer hunt which are not accessable by any roads (without tresspassin)and for just puttin' around with my wife and hounds.

I'm no expert, but I had a 9.9 on a 14 foot fiberglass decked out for fishing, and it didn't come near plane. Again though, please refer to my first statement :)

I'm pretty sure it won't plane with a 6hp. Never mind. You'll probably get about 7-8 mph out of it. Enjoy the view as you go. Put your feet up and watch the world go by in slow motion. It's good for your blood pressure.

Yeah it won't plane. But it will push it fine. Congrats on your first boat.

when i was younger I had an aluminum shell, row boat type boat. It was probably about 12-13' w/ a '66 6hp evinrude. It got up on plane no problem. putting my cooler and gas tank as far foward helped along with being very light.

Follow this advice and you will add years to your life.:)

My 16' ft. jon with a tohatsu 9.8 4 strk. goes as fast as I "need" to go.
I rarely feel the need to run at full throttle.

Thanks ya'll. My wife and I have been recovering our seats with tarp (cut out and glued) using the latest in Bubba engineering. I finished my homemade rod holders using 4" PVC pipe and painted black. Everything is coming together. Hope to get my little Johnson back in time for my boats maiden voyage this weekend.

I did think of a question, maybe someone could answer for me. I have a 15 or 20 lb river anchor, would 1/4" rope and a working limit of 90 lbs be ok or does it need to be 3/8" rope? I'll be in a small/medium river and on lakes.
