My first boat (89 18' bayliner)

I recieved an offer from a friend to take a 89 Bayliner off his hands for nothing. It has a Force 85 OB on it and was run/registered last in 07. Unfortunetly since then it was left uncovered outside. It seems to be in decent condition and could be saved with some TLC and some cash. I was just wondering if I'm in over my head with the project or if it's worthy. From what I can see and was told the motor is clean and functional. I'm no expert (they will be along shortly) but.
My biggest concerns would be
A. Will the engine start and run.
B. How bad is the floor and the transom.
C How many electrical gremlins are you going to have.

Welcome to iboats!

The sole (aka "floor"), transom, and stringers are the main concern when these boats are left out in the weather. Even a small soft spot in the sole may indicate a lot of rot.

PS: Your boat is 17', the same model as mine. The larger Capri in '89 was nominally 19', called the 1900, and it came with a Force 125 HP motor.

Also don't try to trailer with those straps attached to the cleats at the stern. One good bump and they will rip right out.

I like the Bayliners of that vintage. Design-wise, it's better looking than some of the later Bayliners.

Bayliner may have had problems in other areas, but when it comes to an attractive looking boat, they did okay.

If you are willing to engage in a labor of love, you can have a decent boat for not a lot of cash outlay. Start by checking how extensive the rot in the the sole is.

Go for it!
Labour of Love is right. Dont rush with it. Clean it , as per Captains rounds! you will find all sorts of good and bad stuff. Dry it out for a season. You wont be disapointed (its free) Im going thru the same thing.
