I was getting so proud of myself, but now, im as confused as ever. Can you shed some light on what I have? I can include pictures if it will help. Its sounds like you are right, my buddy has a 1950's chevy that has the exact same motor, however his is a straight 6. So please tell me more.

If you can't find the engine numbers Pics would be a help.
But the only 120hp I know of is the GM.

Re: My First Boat And My Post

Given the claimed age of the engine and the year of the drive the engine could be a 140hp with a 120hp Valve cover. Just don't know when they get that old. The 140 was an overbored/stroked 120hp block in those days.:D

First things first, get the service manuals. If you can't find the free ones buy them.

Well i'm pretty sure I know what your problem is with the power trim.
You don't have it.
I only see 1 line on those trim cylinders.....
In that vintage, power TILT was standard, power TRIM was optional.
If it had power TRIM you would have 2 lines per hydraulic ram.

and with that vintage PTT switch the bottom button trims the engine in, but you have to hold down the top 2 buttons at the same time to TILT the engine out. (assuming you haven't messed up with wiring)

Re: My First Boat And My Post

Believe me, trim worked fine first 2 times out. Then stoped,a passer by was able to bypass the switch and raise the prop by hookijg up a lead from the battery to the acuator(I guess) Worked like a charm then, so its not mechanical, nor hydrolic problems, maybe a fuse, maybe a switch.

Re: My First Boat And My Post

It's kind of hard to sort out your concerns when you pop up with new ones before the old ones are solved. Let's go back to a few.

Trim/Tilt controls--On your boat, the trim out function was limited by a switch on the outdrive which is hard to replace, and which frequently breaks. Many people with Pre-Alpha outdrives have the same problem and deal with it by pressing the middle and top buttons simultaneously to trim out/up (carefully, as there's no limit to this function) and using the bottom button to trim in. Check to see if that works.

Shift Mechanism--You need a new control box. As someone has already pointed out, the one you have there is from an outboard. It doesn't have the proper throw, and I doubt it has the shift-interrupt switch or the throttle-only button. Take a look at this one on Ebay: http://tinyurl.com/599unc. It's the right model for your year. You'll probably have to buy a new set of cables as well.

Prop--The one you have might work. Depends on the characteristics of the hull. If it doesn't, all that will happen is that it will slow you down a bit. It's not like a car, where being over-geared can damage the engine. I'd say hold off on the prop decisions until you get everything going well.

Good luck.

How many hydraulic lines per cylinder.... 1 or 2?
1 is power tilt only
2 is power trim and tilt
thats it! :)

Re: My First Boat And My Post

The muffs slide over the water inlet vents on the outdrive...The inlet vents are above the SKEG fin, kind of hard to miss those.

The hose attachment looks like "head phones" but instead of speakers has suction cup like cups that slide over those inlet holes in the drive.

Not sure if you can even get your engine to run with that busted controler or if its even safe to do since the prop may be spinning with the use of that control. We have all run our engines on land and spun our props to check where the gearing is engaugaing but Im afraid for a new B that that can become dangerious and with that contoler Im not sure if you can apply throttle witout engauging gears.

JUST BE CARFUL if you try this ok!

Not sure but you may want to change the water pump impellar also if you havent doen it in a while or dont know when it was done last. If you get the motor running you will be able to tell if the pump is pumping water of you have a nice amount of water flow out of the prop and exhaust ports at the bottom of the transom plate.

Re: My First Boat And My Post

Ziggy, thanks for the link, took a couple of tries , but i got it. Thank u very much

captn J

I have two hoes both sides for the hydraulic trim, both have good seals with no leaks. As far as pushing both bottons, you are correct, to trim out you need to push both bottons, trim in was only one botton. Still no luck, trim down doesn't work, busted botton? Im beginning to think its not a fuse. I guess i could reverse the bottons and see what direction the trouble goes, or a volt meter maybe. Thanks bro

cheburashka

sorry for the confusion, i figure if i pruge all the questions at once, hopefully I willl reach a "pro" in the area i need help(seems to be working, thank ylu all)I have tried pushing the trim bottons in every sequence, i even crossed my fingers and toes, no luck. Speed control is a lost cause, i would love to rebuild it, may have to suck it up and just by a new one, with trim controls. As far as the prop, my current one is bent, have just seen 3 fin props and 4 fin props, just was wondering if anyone had any advice on a upgrade.

BAYLINER185

Im going to try and find the intakes, under the skeg, i wasn't sure. As far as engine running, reverse works fine, foward, all i get in an increase in RPM with no prop movement, so I feel the throttle cable engages, however, the gear linkgage seems to follow in the controller. Thanks for the advice on the intake prop, that is the type of advice I am looking for.

Thank you alll once again. Im pulling the trim switch out right now.
