I just bought a 1985 19 ft glasply impulse with a 90 horse evinrude on it this thing does not even take the boat 10 miles an hour the dealer says it should move around 38 to 40 he rebuilt the carbs and replaced the prop to no avail is this a throttle cable problem or just not a enough horsepower to move this thing

Re: My first boat

Hello Schafdog,

The first thing I would do is do a compression check on all 4 cylinders. They should be within 10% of each other. If that checks out then I would check your spark on each spark plug wire for a strong blue spark, then if that checks out then check the fuel delivery system. How old is your fuel? If the fuel is old I would get rid of it and flush the fuel tank out. I would also change/clean out all of your fuel filters. Let us know what you find or how the items I just explained check out. Then we can go from there. Also check your spark plugs or if you don't know when they were last changed out get yourself a new set Champion plugs.

I forgot one more thing. If your fuel is old make sure you flush your fuel tank out and also clean out the fuel pickup tube it might have trash in it. Also make sure you use fresh 87 octane fuel and mix 50:1 oil to gas with TCW-3 rated outboard motor oil. That would be 16 ounces oil to 6 gallons of fresh 87 octane fuel.

I would not lift a finger - put the monkey on the dealer's back. A 90 on a 19'er ain't going to be a speed demon but it should plane easily. Years back I had an 80 Merc on a 19'er and it served my family quite nicely for years.

How fast do you think it should go? We were told atleast 35-40mph. It has an oil pump that automatically mixes the fuel and oil together. Compression is good. They installed a new OMC throttle and ignition system and the gauges are not working.

Ditto with SoLittle... Take it back and don't accept it again until they are sure it's right....I think 40 MPH on a 19'er with a 90 HP is a stretch.

I agree with rick, 40 mph is a stretch. My 16 ft bass boat w/90 does 48 at WOT. That 19' is a lot more boat.

Re: My first boat

I have a 16' campion with a 90 hp evinrude. I can coax it up to 41-42 MPH if I am alone in the boat. With a few buddies and full gas tanks its more like 34-35 MPH. my boat is smaller...but you still should be able to go faster than 10 MPH. Are you trimming the motor properly??? what are your RPM's at WOT (wide open throttle, or full speed) Basically, do you feel the motor is running at it's full potential?..........cause the boat could be water logged and way too heavy..............or do you feel like the engine may not be fireing on al cylinders (lack of power getting started......and doesn't ever get to that high pitched loud whine of a engine going full speed). You have a problem with something IMO, first we have to decide whether it's the boat or the motor.
