First time boat owner here. I picked up an old 79 Starcraft 18' with a Mercury 50HP motor on it. The motor, I'm told doesn't run, but at least the boat itself is in great shape. Of course, I'd like to see if I can get the motor running too.
How do I tell if it's a 2 stroke, or 4? It's a 4 cylinder, has 2 carbs. Is there an easy way to tell? I feel dumb for asking, but aside from pulling the head, I'm not sure how else I'd be able to tell.
Once I know that answer, I'll need to figure out what kind of gear oil to use, and possibly also crankcase oil. If it's a 2-stroke, I think I only worry about using 2-stroke oil in the fuel.
Thanks in advance. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.
