My first dumb mistake!

Well this is my third year boating and I have managed my first mistake. It's kinda funny now that I am safe on land. AT the time I was pretty pissed at myself.

Late last year my steering cable locked up on my 17' bass boat. I bought a new cable and helm kit and installed it in October. The temperature dropped fast and I didn't get to put it in the water until today. So I backed the boat into the water, fired it up, pulled the trailer out and parked. All fine. My wife was in the boat waiting for me. I came back, hopped on board. Untied the lines and put it in reverse. I have had a bit of a hard time learning to back up straight but today was very bad. I felt like a drunken idiot. Luckily the dock was empty except for me. I finally cleared the dock, put it in forward and turned the wheel to the left...

THE BOAT TURNED RIGHT!!!!!

I looked at my wife and she is staring back at be like I'm a moron. Well I am but that's besides the point. She asked why I turned back towards the dock. I said I didn't I turned left! Mt steering was comletely backwards!

I have been waiting to go fishing for the past 3 weeks. Had to buy a new trolling motor, water pump, fish finder and clean up some wiring. Then wait for clear weather. So I just trolled just above idle to my fishing spot. If there had been anyone at all out there, I would have just came back in, but it was pretty empty. I just used the trolling motor the rest of the day. We finished back at the dock so no harm done. We got home, I pulled the helm apart. I installed it just like the directions said. I still have the directions. It shows the rack on the bottom side of the helm. I flipped it over to the top side and everything in fine.

I have never felt like Tim the Tool Man Taylor in my whole life!!!

Hopefully that will be the worst stupid thing I ever do on the water.

Too bad you're not dyslectic. Then you would've steered in the direction you meant to go!!

I'm glad you had the presence of mind to say that it was your first mistake. If you're like the rest of us it's just the first in a long line.

I laughed my *** off at the dyslexic joke! Sometimes, my wife actually is! She laughed her *** off too. She said I should have let her take the wheel, we would have been fine!
Yea, I know I will make more. I am hoping that will be the worst! :D

Mkatts thank you! I though I was the only "I'm a moron" out there that got the rack upside down. And I got the throttle reversed too!

Re: My first dumb mistake!

my wife asked me why on earth I would admit something like this and risk people thinking I am stupid. I told her three reasons...

1. Becuase it was funny.
2. Becasue if you can't laugh at yourself, you have no business laughing at tohers that make dumb mistakes. I laugh at a lot of people all the time so, What's good for the goose, is good for the gander!
3. And lastly, I told her that there is no way in the world I am the first or only one to make this mistake!

:D

Thanks!

mkatts,

First off if you only made one mistake in three years.......yer not trying hard enough. Second any outing safely completed is a good one. Things that occur on those outing merely enhance the boating experience, the more the merrier.

Sorry I'll try harder from now on!

It's this site fault I have been lucky/carefull. I read posts from this site for over a year before I even bought a boat. All these mistakes and such are locked in my head and every time I go out I think of them, and try like hell not to do any of them myself!

  Directions?

You didn't mention the part about testing the new steering kit on land, and concluding that it was correctly installed. ;)

Re: My first dumb mistake!

I had the same thing happen to me...the steering wheel backwards thing.
Got out on the water and realized it, but stayed out all day. Boy was that confusing.
Then I got into my truck and, well, you know. I steered the wrong way once or twice.
Glad I got that fixed pronto.
Edited because I just wanted the boating population out there to know that I did not put it together, my buddy did.
Funny thing is....he never went boating with me that day. Hmmmmm....wonder why
