My first impressions of Smart Tabs SX

I installed my new Smart Tabs and started with the #3 hole. When I first left the dock the motor wasn?t running well, and it became very apparent that they were too strong. I also have steering issues that exacerbated the problem. It bow steered very bad and with the sloppy steering it was very evident that they were set too strong. I moved them to the #1 hole (least pressure) and after fixing numerous motor problems I finally got the boat running well enough to actually try them out.

All I can say it WOW! With 400 lbs of passengers in the front seats I would get on plane in 1 1/2 seconds with HALF throttle! The bow barely moved up. Top speed appeared at least as good as before, but I have no actual measurements to go by. Giving it full throttle it just seemed to start out on plane. I couldn?t determine when it actually got on plane as it truly seemed to just start there.

My buddy with the expensive HP bass boat (Ranger with a 225 hp Mercury) who wasn?t convinced that these tabs would work was watching from shore. His first comments were that I wouldn?t need them at this lake (Berryessa) as this boat performed well there (I bought it from his Mom). Even he said it looked like I just jumped on plane (this was when I was trying it at half throttle). And he thought I looked fast at top speed compared to the other boats (it was a very busy day).

When I added 400 lbs (or more) of people and gear, and put 300 lbs of it in the seats right at the transom, it did quite jump up on plane, but it still wasn?t bad (3-4 seconds) and I could still see over the bow. Obviously, moving the people forward made it better.

Overall, my first impressions are that these things are great. Now, if only John would make parts guaranteed to fix the steering. ;)

And, no thread is complete without pictures, so:

Hey Hitech, glad the tabs worked out. That looks like a nice old boat, what is it?

It's called a California. Never heard of them before. I think they were intended as a Tahiti knock off. That basically what it looks like.

And I think they are tuned correctly. Seemed strong enough without being too strong with just two of us in the boat, and still enough with it as stern heavy as it will ever be. However, next time out I'm going to try the string indicator. I know everyone gave John crap about it, but I liked the idea. ;)

Yeah, I thought you might like the placement. ;) And I really like them also. It's a whole new boat, but you've probably heard that a few times. :D

Which actuators did you get? I started with 80 lbr's and dropped back to 60 lbr's. That was a perfect strength for all my various boat loads.

I have the 60s. I thought that would be too much as it is a 17' boat, with low freeboard and is light. It has a 4 cylinder motor (110 hp). However, I have a family of 5 and the two boys are adult size, and we typically will have a friend of theirs along. Because of that John said I should try the 60s first. And it looks like he was correct. :D

Besides wanting to show off what I think is a good picture of the boat, does the attitude of the boat look correct. It looks good to me, but I'm not really sure what it should look like.

I won't say "I TOLD YA SO", but I did!!!!

Attitude of the boat seams fine for the way it is loaded and the HP you have. If I am correct, you can't trim that outdrive while running right!

You are correct, I cannot. Also, and I probably should have add this, but that is at about 3/4 throttle. And those boys in the back add up to at least 350 lbs (their big boys). :D

If I could trim the drive, what would you suggest I do to change it? Just curious (I'm just learning all this stuff).

If you could trim the drive out some and had a good cupped prop it would raise the bow a bit and you would gain some MPH!

Re: My first impressions of Smart Tabs SX

Thanks. I wondered if the bow should be a little higher. Now that I have the smart tabs I might consider moving the stern drive ?out? some. There are three adjustment holes and I believe it is in the middle one. Once I have everything running correctly I might move that to the outside hole.

Thanks again. :D
