Well, I started removing the deck and transom and the wood was so soft and wet that i could remove it handfulls at a time. It was nasty. When i got the boat it looked real good and just had a few soft spots and now i am glad i didnt take her out to the water. Anyway i had started a post a week ago asking some questions about the deck and the title of the post didnt draw much attention so some of my questions didnt get answered. Now that i figured out how to downsize my pics i figured i would start this post with my pics so that anyone that wants can follow my rebuild. Just so you know my background While i have never messed with any boats and i have never messed with fiberglass i am a certified welder/pipefiter/carpenter for the last 13 years. So while i have some common sense i still will be needing some help with my rebuild.

Re: My free boat that only needed a little TLC

Hello zach, welcome to iboats. I am also new to this boat restoring stuff but I have learned a lot on this site. Now I am done tearing all that old rotten stuff out and grinding and sanding and grinding and sanding. Finally I am about ready to start replacing new wood and fiberglass.
All I can say to you is to make sure you take lots of pics and ask a lot of questions. everyone here will help as much as they can. I know the great people on this site have helped me a great deal.
By the way that picture reminds me of when I started. It will make a great BEFORE Picture.
I will be sure to check up on your progress and help any way I can. Keep at it!

I think a lot of us are in the same situation you are - we're pretty mechanically inclined, we've built things before, just haven't worked with fiberglass before. You're already one step ahead of the pack in finding this forum. The majority of people would either part out their boat, find a sucker to buy it (at a loss), or take it to a shop and have someone else mess with it.

I'm convinced old boats are a great source of compost. When I pried off my floor (which I thought was going to be a simple deck replacement), I found the same thing you did - paper thin laminates of wood half rotted (some completely rotted) EVERYWHERE. 2 of my 4 stringers were the same, along with the transom.

Like Allstate, you're in good hands here. I don't think there's any issue that could happen to you that hasn't happened to anyone else. Just get familiar with the 'search' feature and don't be afraid to ask questions!
