Hi all this is my first post and I've searched and have failed to find anything to help with this. I just got an old 1977 Cado with a Johnson 70 hp also 1977 vintage that has no spark. The engine was checked out and started by a good boat mechanic about a month ago and hasn't been used since but won't start now. The boat mechanic is on vacation for several weeks so I can't get back to him but I have experience as an auto mechanic but just don't know where to go from here. The engine spins good but has no spark to the spark plugs.

I charged the batterys before taking it to the lake, there is a trolling motor control panel at the front of the boat that the charger plugs into. I noticed when I flipped the switch on the control panel from battery one to battery two that the battery charger pulled down for a second and then quit charging. At that point I found that the batterys are connected together in parallel which I think explains the problem when I tried to switch batterys. A fuse was blown in one of two wires running from the batterys to the trolling motor control and I replaced the fuse and haven't touched those switches again. There is an elecrical bus bar on the right rear of the engine I have checked with a test light, one connection is hot all the time and one is hot when the key is on, funny thing is that the one that gets hot from the key has no other wires connected to it.

I need some suggestions on wires and circuits to check, I don't find a kill switch anywhere. I think originally the choke was activated by pushing in on the ignition switch, there is now a push button on the dash which works the choke. But again, it chokes and gets fuel just no spark. I know I could buy some manuals but I don't really want to spend any more money on this until I can see it at least running. Thanks in advance.

Re: My Johnson won't start!

Well I fixed it without any help from this forum. I have to say I'm stunned that I got not a single reply. I have noticed some similar posts since mine that got several answers. Oh well. If you guys ever need answers about shotguns or about anything for that matter trapshooters.com is excellent, someone will answer, rimfirecentral.com is another friendly site for answers about rimfire guns or just about anykind. Never seen anyone ignored on either one of those.

what we do, when we get overlooked, is not whine about it, instead, we use the word "bump". need help in figuring out how to do that, just ask!

I guess I had to smile at the end of your post,as you would like to see it running, without spending money.I would like to be able to do that with the house hold appliance's, family auto's, you name it, when they give a problem.

If you didnt notice, this is a real busy time in the repair fora here. A post, depending on the time of day, can be pushed to page 2 in a half an hour. That would probably be a good time to follow the rules of most fora (probably the 2 you just mentioned too) and bump your post.

Based on your attitude I would expect that NOW you will get some responses :)

Manuals are available at your local library for free. But it is obvious that you were just interested in having an answer given to you in the moment that you wanted it. This forum is much like praying. "We pray in our time; God answers in His time.":D Patience and protocol are definitely virtues on iboats. I'll just leave it there.
