A little story for all of you. I finaly found an installed my exhaust manifolds ($1000) and decided to make sure all was good, since water had gotten into the cyl. Took boat out into the river and ran great... Until temp gauge went from 160 to 0. raised cover and breather hoses to flame arrester had water mist coming out of them. Rushed back to pier and checked oil. As expected 1 1/2 qts over with milk! Load on trailer and pulled up the ramp, Pow! tire blows out! Truck jack too tall for axle and spring drops too much to go to frame. Anyway, got spare on(one thing I did right) and went home to inspect. Pulled head looking for where water had damaged the head when manifold leaked, nothing? Decided I'd pull the port side head, and low and behold a 4" crack right above center cyl. So, this weekend I'm pulling my motor and in a few weeks(when a reman arives) I'll be installing a new motor! Ain't boating a blast!!!!!
Guess next time, I'll make sure it's winterized properly, even if I think I got all the water out!

Oh man that SUCKS!

There is nothing worse than having to pull in(out) early.

I had a similar experance this weekend, not as bad though, I just wore through my ball gear :(

Good luck getting her back in the water!

Re: My Joyous boat!

The marina where I keep my boat has a boat in similar yet worse shape. The guy who owns the boat was hospitalized last year and his "buddy" told him he would take care of his boat. Well he didn't do a good job and the block, exhaust manifolds, and even the thermostat housing were split open. I do mean split not cracked. I decided then and there the money they charge to winterize is well worth it. That way if they engine gets damaged it's their baby. Besides when my mechanic does it he changes all the fluids, filters, grease all the joints, and fills with antifreeze.

I know I'll only be doing this once! It's a whole lot easier (and Cheaper)to spend a little time making sure the block is full of antifreeze!

Re: My Joyous boat!

Just a funny note to add. I haven't checked here in a while. After getting my boat in the water and running it about 15 hours, we were out with friends(4 boats) on 4th of July. We are running back up the river at about 3500RPM and suddenly I notice the engine tone change. Look down at tach and it's about 3200. Look at oil pressure, it's about 5! I said screw it, I'm making it to shore. Come to find out #1 main was too tight and decided it wanted to squeeze the main bearing out of the cap. Luckily the motor came in August and had a 1 yr warranty. I have since installed the "new" reman, and put about 3 hours on it. I now have another boat, but need to get some hours on this before I feel safe getting rid of it. After all the headache, I know I'll never get it out of the junker!

Wilee

A couple weeks ago everybody on here went back and forth about antifreeze or just drain because and I quote air dont freeze. Your story is the exact reason I drain and fill with antifreeze and drain it back out in the spring. My boat is a 1980 and thats all I have ever done for the 23 years that I have owned it and the previous owner did the same. I sleep well on cold winter nights knowing I wont find cracks in the spring. Sorry for your bad luck.

Actually This was my own fault. I didn't add antifreeze, but I also hadn't properly drained the blocks. I had hoped that with the manifolds off and the lower water pump hose off, enough water would have drained. Unfortunatly I was incorrect, and there was still enough to split the block between the cylinders and into the lifter galley.

that's a hard education......:(

empty of water is the word... anti freeze or not.... no water in the system, anywhere..... = no freeze damage....
