Whatever...enjoy your gas bill!

This part made your "happy little thread" confrontational and is the reason you've gotten the attitude you've gotten.

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

OK, I just have to ask. Why in the world would you pull 2 slalom skiers up at once?

For normal use the 3.0L works well. I admit that coming up behind my father in-laws Malibu is easier than behind my boat, but it still works.

Lol, well have you ever seen shows from Cypress gardens? My point was just that with heavier skiers/multiple skiers, you WILL notice a difference in how easy/quick it is to pull them out of the water with a larger engine. If all you do is tow the 150lbs kid by themselves, then it won't make enough difference to necessitate having the bigger engine. I will say that all things being equal, I'll usually choose to have the most HP I can get. I don't use my boats for long distance cruising, so having a possibly more fuel efficient engine doesn't help me out much. Different strokes for different folks.

Wow, some butts around here need some powder! :D

Sounds like many of you need to actually get out on your boats and actually use them, instead of creating a whinefest on here.

p.s. my 5.7 V8 is better than all of your boats :p

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

I had a 20ft (19.6)1985 Searay Seville with the 170Hp..I think it was the 3.0...its been a while now, anyway, in Boston Harbor, trimmed out I got 46MpH MAX.. based on my Lowrance GPS..my feul tank was a 20 gallon I think..maybe 30,, I dont remember but i could go all day and then some and still have a good deal of gas left.. i never did the skii thing so no clue on that

I now have a 20 ft aquasport with a 140 Evinrude outboard...I havent blasted this one to see top speed but as mentioned some time has passed and now I care more about me and my 7yr old son catching stripers...than speed..

All in all its about the time you spend out there and not how much gas you waste..afetr all, starting your boat is always going to waste some gas...hahahah

I read some where that there is a caluculation to figure gas consumption?? something like 1 gph for every 10hp (example 200HP =20gph at full throttle)
Anyone ever put this to the test??

I think top end is not so much the deciding factor, as getting on plane, holding plane, performance with noone vs a full crew etc...

Your going to spend most of your time throttle up and cruising on plane. A 3.0 and a 4.3 will do this. It all comes down to whether or not they do what they need during all situations.

My 7.4L is at least 29.8% better than yours.

I was waiting for one of YOU to show up, now just wait till some jerk with a 496 or 502 shows up haha, then the joke's on you!

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

You all seem to be ignoring an important factor: hull deadrise.

Given the same engine and flat water, a hull with less deadrise will be faster than one with more deadrise. This is because the boat with less deadrise lifts further out of the water at speed and therefore has less wetted surface than the one with more deadrise.

Put that low deadrise hull through a chop, and you won't be able to go fast since the chop will beat you up too much.

A 3.0 motor in a 15 degree deadrise hull may be faster than a 4.3 motor in a 21 degree deadrise hull, assuming flat water conditions.
The 15 degree deadrise hull may pull up a skier more easily since the motor has to do less work to lift the hull.

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

I picked up a 1987 Sylvan with a Yamaha L-4 3.0 last winter (Merc engine) and I have been happy with it. I don't tow and I am not worried about top speed - I am a sightseer and a tourist on the water. At 1400-1600 RPM the GPS says 5 to 7 KPH, hardly leaves a ripple for a wake, purrs along very quietly and it took nearly 4 hours of cruising for the fuel gauge to start bouncing off the FULL peg (on a 24 gallon tank). Just perfect for me. :D

All of you might as well sell your boats now. My Merc 470 to OMC Stringer Adapter plate is almost ready for market. When it becomes available, the ultimate boat drive system will be available to everyone! Get rid of your outboards and I/O's now!

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

Unfortunately, according to the NASA/BP computer simulations, the 470/Stringer hybrid would NOT be capable of pulling skiers with only 8 people in the boat. The unbelievable (but documented in posts on this very forum!) power of this combo will leap the boat completely out of the water and rip the skier's arms off unless you have AT LEAST 16 people in the boat.

Part of this performance gain is due to the excellent gas mileage which allows an enormous weight savings in fuel. Based on historic data from these forums, when fitted with a 16 ounce fuel tank (an empty adult beverage container is recommended) it should have a range of approximately 169.43 miles. It should be noted that many of the data points may have been biased by the amount of potential fuel tanks the posters had consumed immediatly before posting their data.
