When I pull #1 the motor dies. When #2 is pulled it slows way down in RPM, almost to the point of dying, when #3 is pulled there's an almost unnoticable drop in rpm, like maybe 100 at the most.

Ok so now the plot thickens. On a whim I checked the fuel pump that was rebuilt at the beginning of the summer and the diaphram was shot again. I rebuilt the pump and took the boat out and It ran perfectly all throughout the throttle range, for about 2 minutes. It then dropped back down and started running the way it did before. So now I'm totally confused and think i'm back to chasing a fuel problem. I know the ignition had problems too, but it looks like a multi-headed monster at this point. Tomorrow I'm replacing the engine fuel fitting and putting good hose clamps on all the lines. I don't know if this will ever end.

If it's any consolation, I tore mine down to the bare block twice and never found anything all that wrong with it except a small sand hole on #4. The day I picked up my E-Tec was the first day it ran right and now my buddy has it on his plank and it's running great. The only thing I can figure is that it was fuel. I'm running a big Racor fuel/water separator with a 90gph rating. I put an electric assit pump in just before I put the E-Tec on but I never ran the Mariner with it so I don't know. My buddy isn't running a separator and his tank is in the back of his boat so I suspect that's what the difference is. But that's just speculation and there's no hard proof so if you decide to go that route don't blame me if it doesn't work.

I'm a little concerned about your blown diaphram after only a year. Did you change the check valves too? Blowing a diaphram is not a normal thing. They usually last years unless E-10 got to them.

You test pulling plug wires was after done with the new switchbox? I'm stumped. If there was indeed SOME change when you pulled each wire, that tells me all cylinders are firing. On mine (before switchbox change) pulling #3 had no affect whatsoever. Polycephaly indeed.

same problem here with my 70, new trigger, new plugs, 2 different packs tried...and nothing.....the new trigger was what fixed the problem for 4hrs, now its bogging again. i dont know whats wrong, ill try pumping the ball, ill try a new plug in #1 then its back to the mechanic which i swear isnt getting paid. everything he fixes just breaks or wasnt done right, no attention to detail.

Well guys last night I finished rebuilding the carbs, and still nothing. I had gone through everything with a fine tooth comb and still couldn't get above 3000 rpm. After I rebuilt the carbs it wouldn't do anything but idle. It had gotten to the point where my wife was more concerned about my mental health than the health of the bank account and said "just let it go, we'll buy a new outboard over the winter." I agreed and fell asleep last night with a strange sense of relief because at least I didn't have to work on the outboard in the morning. Apparently it was that sleep and relief that gave me the answer. This morning I woke up and knew I had missed something, but wasn't sure what. I poured over my manual and just happened to look at the basic specs sheet and it said the spark plug should be a Champion L-78V. I knew that didn't sound right and went down to investigate. That's where I discovered my huge mistake. Instead of checking what plug should have been in there I just replaced what was in there, a champion L-76V. Apparently the PO had the 76's in there, and because they never went above idle on a no wake lake they never noticed it. I put in the 78v's, readjusted the carb and took a spin. BAM!!! That old girl got right up and went straight to full throttle. She ran like I've never heard her run, hard fast and steady!!! Moral of the story is ALWAYS check the manual and make sure you have the right plugs to begin with.

lucky...mines still shot, and another 24$ on new plugs wouldnt be worth it, they wont make any difference. I think im stuck buy ANOTHER trigger and putting it in

Nice job Duck! Congratulations. I too know the feeling of having my outboard run as it has never run before. I think my switchbox was tempermental from the day I bought this boat last April. She's still running GREAT with the new switchbox.
