I have a 1976 Merc 650 outboard that was having problems running. while i was diagnosing the problem, the stater went. At this point I took it to a mechanic. He replaced the stater, but he told me that I needed to rebuild my carbs. I pulled the carbs apart and found that they were clean. upon further investigation, I found that I was getting fuel into my fuel bowl, but it wasn't leaving. I figured that it was probably the fuel pump and I replace it. Now the engine starts, but it backfires occasionally. It is also fouling out plugs. I am at a loss. Please help!

If you have fuel in the bowls and it's not leaving, you have clogged carbs. Take them back apart, soak them in carb. cleaner, blow them out with compressed air and reassemble using carb kits. Can you give us some history on the motor? Has it sat for a while? New to you?

I have done that with the carbs already. The fuel problem was apparently the fuel pump diaphram. I have owned the boat for about 4 years and this is the first real problem that I have had with the boat. it seems like it would be a timing problem, but I do not know how the timing would be out of sync, or how to adjust it either.

if it is backfire at all it is most likely a timing problem and it will probobly need a lync and sinc...

i had somewhat the same problem with my 79 402 i hope for you it isn't the same problem but i would suggest doing a compression test before spending any more $$$ on it
