when was the last time the carbs were clean and rebuilt, could be air leak on fuel lines, is it missing or vibrating a lot. could be fuel pump, but my bet is on linc n sinc. i have a 71' 1350 click my name to get email add. request linc n sinc. will send it to you. a decarb wouldn't hurt it either. what year is it or serial #

Run a compression check. And post what you come up with. Then we can go from there. It is a must to tell what shape it is in.

Re: my merc1500 slow to get on to plane

The motor has been fully reconditioned. My local outboard machanic done compression test. Said they ranged betweened 130 to 135psi. He pulled down the carbs. The fuel pumps have had reco kits though them. It runs a lot better on a very hot days. When it does get going it runs fine doesn't miss at all.The serial number is: 8008578... The machanic tells me to get rid of it and buy a mercury v6 or a johnson! Tell's me they are more powerful and more reliable. I don't want to agree with him! cheers d:)

Re: my merc1500 slow to get on to plane

If your boat does not have a tach, STOP and get one in there. The most common reason for a motor struggling to get up on plane is TOO MUCH PROP PITCH. This is also the leading cause of melted pistons in a Merc 1500. This also means yesterdays compression test is invalid, as it takes about 30 seconds to melt a piston.

You want to prop it to make at least 5500 at wide open (that don't mean to run it there all day) You need to get a tach on that boat and then set it up right.

I will be buying a tacho now! :% I had my machanic in the boat with me. He said it sounds like it is reving at around 5000rpm. But he also told me it is ok to tighten the carb mounting bolts with a screwdriver and a hammer...
