Hey guys. Do you think there is anyway to make my engine alittle bit louder than it is now? And if possible, is there a way to make it alittle bit more powerful, just for fun. Thanks for your help.

Well, from our vantage point, you made it more powerful by telling us the correct HP8)

True, but is there a restrictor plate that I could take off behind the carb or something like that to get more out of the 8.0?

You need to provide more information for a better response. 2 stroke, 4-stroke, year, serial number would help. At least something.

A quick glance by my untrained eye shows that the principal difference between the 2-stroke 6/8/9.9 engines was the carburetor up until the mid 90s. Then the 9.9 had it's displacement increased (bigger pistons).

To me, that fact suggests that the earlier 9.9 lacked low RPM torque. Which makes the value of upgrading an early 8 into a 9.9 very questionable.

In that case, the 9.9 is simply a larger engine. You would need a new engine block, pistons, carb, etc.

Do you think there is any way to make it alittle bit more louder if there is no way to push out any more power?

Why do you want to make it louder? The whole point for many of the HP restricted lakes is noise. The object is to make them quieter.

Re: My Mercury 6.0 HP

If you want to make it louder, drill holes in the midsection along the lines of "Bob's machine shop" exhaust snout. Don't expect any more power after you do. In fact, you may even loose some since exhaust timing is dependent on the exhaust system. Heck, your entire outboard could kerplode if you do, so make sure you really know what you're doing before whipping out the brace & bit and start blowing though structural bits of your outboard.

If you want to improve performance, look to the rig and setup. That's where the big gains are to be had.
