Re: my mercury recieved the death sentence today.

check myself ??? because i don't even know HOW to use a multimeter !

sad as the fact that i know nothing about these things, it's why i took it in.

Brought my 15hp to a mechanic and paid extra to test run in pool. Said it ran great, I took it into the water It was revving but not going anywhere. Came on the forum and bought a compression tester and found out cyl 2 had 0 compression. Marina mechanic ha more like marina rip off! This could be a great learning experience for you. If you really mess it up buy a new ob and if not you will learn how to work on obs. The people on here are great and a lot have more experience then any one of those college drop out " marine Mechanics as they call them selves " probably finished a 6 week course in devry and couldn't make it as a car mechanic. Do the work your self. YouTube and IBOATS are your friends :)

Sounds similar to my experience. He prob was a knowledgable mechanic. He also knows he's in the business to sell Boats and Motors and he would rather sell you a newer more technologically advanced motor than mess with your old outdated motor. Hes got bigger fish to fry. And viewing things from his side I might feel the same way if I was in his position. I had a local marine mechanic do me the same way with my 1986 115hp stack six. I could tell he just didn't want to mess with it. He just wanted to sell me a newer motor. Found another Good mechanic willing to rebuild it and I've run it the last 2 summers with out any problems. Runs Great! For the $2500.00 I paid him to rebuild it I don't think I would have gotten much in a 115hp. As long as the compression is good on all cylinders its prob very fixable. I don't know your mechanical skills but after having mine for 2 years now and doing some tinkering myself these engines really are NOT that complicated. Get yourself a good service manual you might surprise yourself. I could have done alot of the things the mechanic did to mine and saved myself alot of that $2500.00. ALOT of knowledge on this forum. GOOD LUCK.

ok, here's the update, they rebuilt one of the carbs, but the lower carb is flooding the airbox with gas, they are having a hard time finding the source of the leak... they said they pressure tested the carb and it checks out, don't know if the carb housing has a crack or maybe around the valve seat....i wanted to talk to the tech, but they said he took a break to beat his head against a pole...he told me the motor and ignition system is in great shape and that it's a carburation (sp?) issue... i see a new carb in my future.

Re: my mercury recieved the death sentence today.

I ran into a guy at the boat ramp the other day. He had an awesome 57 feathercraft with a 71 merc 500 on the back that he was tuning up. I talked to him for a while. In passing he mentioned that he had been fighting a leaking carb for a month. He had rebuilt it a couple of times and tried everything he knew to try. He finally discovered that his bowl cap was cracked:mad:
Not saying that's your problem but sometimes it's easy to overlook a simple solution.

BOAT IS DONE !

they said they couldn't find the leak and after further checking found that someone had put a double gasket on the carb somewhere.
he also said the timing was way off(i thought it ran pretty good) and then he said they found something they've never seen before, apparently there's a check valve in the fuel pump, when they checked it out, the ball inside had a small hole drilled through it, of course they replaced it and all fuel lines. all together it costs $611.97, with $590 of it labor(took a total of almost two full days)...it says the motor is strong and runs across the water as it should at all levels throttle...i'll be fishing this weekend for sure !
