I know you cant make ice cream out of sh@# but i dont think im trying to do that this time. I cant keep the 1948 9.8 johnson sea horse running in the barrel. I disassembled the engine and cleaned it out the best i could and inspected every port to make sure it wasnt plugged. I replaced bolts and cleaned out 50+ yrs of carbon build up. I thought for sure it would run this time to no avale. It will run fine on the bench but the minute i put it in the barrel it shut down. I also noticed when it was apart that the block wasnt getting any water which the prop is responcible for delivering. I blew out all the lines and was getting air flow in return so I know the system isnt blocked. Any quesses on the problem of lack of water and zero performance in the barrel would help. I tried to mess with the idle pins on the carberator and it did not help.

sounds like it is time to replace the impeller and or water pump. it won't run worth crap in the barrel if it ain't cooling.

Might have been better to just bump your previous post to top and save confusion old sea horse.Did you ever test compression? How about the possible exhaust tube restriction mentioned by Chinewalker?

Re: my motor hates water

Im going to test compression today and the exhaust tube is clear along with the water intake, around inside the motor and back down to the lower unit and out. I wish it had a water pump then i would know what that part of the problem was. I wanted to rephrase my problem in hopes of getting a more defined answer. sorry about the confusion

Re: my motor hates water

Maybe you have a bad head gasket. It could cause the water to be sucked into the cylinder and kill the motor off when you run it in the barrel. That would also keep the water from flowing in the engine correctly, causing poor water circulation. just a though... Good luck

Horse, and everyone else, how can a propellor cool a motor in neutral ? I always found a water pump on any NON air cooled motor. I am old. Hopefully not that old.-----------------------------------I have the answer for the tank stalling on your other posting of this subject.

The answer is very simple. The engine doesn't have neutral.
Looks like you're not too old afterall. :D

Re: my motor hates water

OSH's motor is a direct drive motor. It starts in gear because that's the only gear there is (unless you spin it around for reverse).

Your motor will not pump water in a barrel. Period. It requires forward movement to pump water. In a barrel, the exhaust bubbles, combined with the water turbulence will prevent it from cooling. You have to put it on a boat to get it to pump.

It's not a bad head gasket either - there isn't one on that motor, as it has a cast in cylinder head.

Are the piston rings floating on the pistons? In other words, is carbon preventing them from properly springing outwards to the cylinder walls? A compression check is definitely your highest priority at the moment, as low compression is beginning to look like your motor's biggest issue. From your "closed" post, it would appear that you've checked for carbon build-up in the motor leg, so scratch that one off the list.

- Scott

Seems like you might for some odd reason be grounding it out in the barrel  ? Look for spark.........

Re: my motor hates water

Now that I see you have posted in other forums and have seen the electrical part brought up, plus all the other options covered and putting all this mess in context, I believe I have found your problem. You aint got enough horsepower to turn the prop in WATER. Pull the prop and try it, as it seems you have tried every thing else

I took the prop off shoved a hose up the intake made sure that water returned and it did and fired it up on the bench. after a little tinkering and the right fuel mix and some sea foam it ran great. I didnt know that the water would not pump in the barrel. Thank you chinewalker so much for that. Im going to the pond tomorrow. you guys are great and all of the postings helped so much thanks again

Re: my motor hates water

thats awesome rabbitdawghunter. I live in northeast nebraska about 40 min west of sioux city and we have some good ponds in the area and more on the way which is great for recreation and tourism. I like to go to the river and the lake in yankton about 30 min north. I have friends who own cabins both up river and down from the damn, so getting on the river is no problem. There is also lakes in burwell, pierce, norfolk, royal, and valentine that we like to make a weekend out of and visit. hope this helps and if you would like more info ask me anytime. The rabbit and squirrel hunting up here aint to bad either.
