My motor is overheating - 2006 Yamaha Vmax carb

Hello about two weeks ago I was running the motor and my overheat alarm went off. So I waited about 20 min and I was able to run back to the launch going slowly. I thought it was due to having my motor trimmed up halfway. Fast forward to today and we ran the boat just fine for a few minutes. The second time we went on a run my alarm went off. At this point I used the trolling motor until we were getting ready to go home and took our time getting back to the launch. The water pressure when I gunned it was 25 and up so it seems to be fine. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing the alarm to go off? I am really concerned now.

When was the last time you checked/changed the thermostats, PRV, and water pump impeller. These are normal preventative maintenance items that Yamaha recommends on a regular basis

Re: My motor is overheating - 2006 Yamaha Vmax carb

I just purchased the boat used from a private party 2 months ago. I do know for a fact the lower unit including the impeller and water pump were replaced prior to me purchasing the boat. I should have it checked by a mechanic but before doing so I would like to hear what an issue like this is caused by?

thermostat not opening properly, PRV sticking open (low RPM overheat), blockage in cooling passages

Are these problems expensive to fix?

I guess I will soon find out how much it will cost. I have set up an appt with my local dealer to take a look at it.

are you sure it was overheat? what did the visual indicates on the tach indicate?
Vmax tells me its on a bass boat.
does this boat have a jack plate, if so a water pressure gauge is a must.
if the remote oil tank filter is clogged you get the same symptoms and an oil indicate, typically 3 bars flashing.
if your not running factory yamaha gauges there is no good indicate.

The motor is on a skeeter zx190. It has a water pressure gauge, low oil and overheat indicators. My water pressure was a good 20+ psi (closer to 25psi)when running. The boat does have a jack plate. After a longer run the alarm overheat and indicator went off. When idling slowly I do not get any alarms.

I took it in and they told me I had a charred exhaust gasket, wrong spark plugs and they will also rebuild my water pump. I find it odd that the water pump needs to be rebuilt because I was getting very good water pressure. The total bill will be $400. Could these problems cause my overheating?
