So I bought a boat for 200 dollars off this guy. Its a 1978 glastron HP 154. Boat came without the following

Trolling motor
Seats
Prop
Batteries
Trailer

Now for my delema, it doesent run, it's a relatively good shaped boat and hopefully won't need much. But it's said to need a stator and belt for the distributor? The parts were removed when I bought the boat so they just need to be installed. My question is how do I find the parts? I've searched eBay and have only found a stator for the coil pack motors not distributer. It's got a merc 900 90 hp but I haven't looked further into identifying it.

Thanks for any and all help and look forward to seeing what you pros out there have to say. And any other things to look for bad? I seen a post about the tilt. I guess mines been jumped and tilt works so relay or solinoid is bad

check the compression before buying parts.

Before you post further questions, you need to identify the motor to year and serial number. You will need those to get parts wherever you find them. As an initial inspection, remove the spark plugs and look into each cylinder as you rotate the engine by hand. Check the top of each piston carefully. If you see pitting or a hole partially through or fully through the crown of the piston, don't spend money on parts as the engine is toast and needs to be rebuilt.

I know about that stuff, I'm a mechanic and planed on compression test and visual inspection. What I ment was other problems that are typical with either the motor or boat, I will look up how to identify the motor as well. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough

So I did a visual check and compression test, everything looked good and compression was almost all 120 with the exception of a 115 and a 110. I didn't check cylinder 6 because I couldn't get to it. So next is identifying it, I can't find the serial number and having dificulties finding good instructions

Ok so I am planning to replace the belt and testing the stator out. Does anyone know how to test a two wire stator for this engine? And I still can't find a serial number only thing I can find is 8526622 and 2114-5999 but neither show up on a year to serial number guide. Also where does everyone buy their parts? Any good online stores? I'm having dificultys finding this belt

I'm going to guess that its actually 3526622 and its a late '72 or early '73 motor. The belt is a common item and can be found on boats dot net or maybe even on this site.

take the nuts off the electrical contacts wherever they meat up with wires and clean them with fine sandpaper. Clean the carbs out real good as they get goo in their that plugs the jets up after sitting a few years. If the timing belt isnt broken you don't need a new one.

The belt is broken, I thinks that's why it had no spark not the stator wich is why I was wondering how to test it. And I don't think that's the serial number, I was not able to get good directions for finding the numbers. Does anyone have a picture of where it is that's not showing just the number but the actual location on the motor

Ok so there's a sticker on the front of the motor about timing and it says 1978 m-900 so I'm guessing that's the motor?

If it is a '78, it would fall withing this range:

90 900 6-cyl 4845301 5160323 1978 USA

You may find a s/n disc on the engine block like this one:

If it is a '78. here is the parts list:

Mercury Parts, MERC 90

Service manual P/N: 90-86134--4

Here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual which will help you until you get an OEM manual. Download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

One important question, do you have a tittle for the boat. The reason I ask is because of the boats description it may of been used as a parts boat and those often don't have tittles, and can be a real problem to get back in service, and if you have put a lot of money into you can really get hosed.

I've seen that pic befor with no success finding it on the block, I already downloaded a service manual from mercury marine.com? 4.50 not a bad price for it and yes boat came with a title, I dOnt buy stuff without papers and they had it runing not too long befor I bought it but things started breaking and went downhill from there.

On a good note I managed to rebuild the solenoid for the tilt as it wouldn't work and I bleed it out and got my bilge pump installed and redid the wires fr accessories and such to prevent fire. Broken fitting for live well drain caused water to leak in so now I need to locate a new one. Will be ordering the belt for timing soon if I can't find a dealer with one

Re: My new/first boat need some advice

And the boat only needed a timing belt and/or stator originally but since the guy gave me such a good deal he took the seats, batteries, trolling motor, and prop with him and I didn't buy the trailer. But the prop won't work for him so I might buy it sometime soon
