Well,
Many thanks for the excellent info and feedback I received around this, particularly from John. Very useful stuff that made quick work of the 'no tach signal' issue.
All working now, and here is a quick pic of it installed in the ol' 90Capri/90hp (...so needed a 20 pole tach of course).
The only thing I have to do now is move the fish finder...and cabling, over to the passenger side. It was mounted on that small horizontal landing pad just to the left and front of the tach. I have a little minor hole just revealed under the lower left side of the tach...but nothing serious that really shows.
Now, I should be able to find out my revs with my 17pitch prop that I have on it now. The idle seems to be very close to 900rpm...which is close to spec in the manual.
Now...what to do with the other 3-4 working 20 pole tachs I bought (for some bizarre reason). I guess its Craiglist time....what is a fair asking price for a good working/used 20 pole tach?....any ideas? Its going to be quite an ad...including speedo's (like the one in the pic), heat buzzers, kill switches
and a bunch of other bayliner/force goo that came with the tachs...long story.
Anywhoooo, so far so good!!:):)

Hey, I need an extra 20 pole tach to make sure my current one is not lying. How much you want to sell one for and what size cutout hole do they fit in?

I think the hole was a 4-1/4"? to 4-3/8"?. The square bezel hides that pretty well. The whole thing is held into the back of the gauge panel with a fairly simple back bracket that fits over the terminal posts. :)
I sent you a PM.;)

Hey, my '85 Capri doesn't look anything like that fighter cockpit you have there! Boy did five years make a difference. :(

John

They changed a fair amount on the capri's in 1990 it seems. The gauges changed over to an analogue look rather than the Star Wars bars style. I think the next big style change for the Capri's came in '93 or '94.
(John, note the very high tech compass on the far right...I got that off the space shuttle:D)
The hull shape and window line changed a fair amount as well. For an entry level boat they are surprisingly good looking...I was surprised.
As for the Tach one thing about these tachs is the big hole/opening they need to mount up. Basically the tach body needs a 4-3/8"? thru hole in the dash and the outer bezel is a 5" square shape....pretty big.
With any luck I'll have it out this weekend...weather depending.;)

Hi Big Prarie,
I too would be interested in one of those "extra" 20-pole tachs for my own project. Let me know.

Re: My new-ish Tach project- completed!

Question. I have a 89 Capri and need to swap out the Tach and other gauges. How did you remove that tach? Just upbolt from the rear or did you remove the console? I find there isn't enough room to swing a wrench to remove the mounting bracket, so any help would be appreciated.

If you use a 1/4 inch driver and a socket, you won't need the room for the wrench. Buy a cheap set of 1/4 inch sockets up to 1/2 inch and, if it doesn't contain an driver, buy one also. That will make working under the panel much easier. It also makes working on the engine easier.

Help me out...I have the same cockpit/gauges and would love to add a tach. Where did you get the matching tach?

Have you tried a ratcheting box wrench? You only have to loosen the nuts a little and they should come off easily using your fingers. But I have this feeling I've already said this to you somewhere.:D
